See Canyon (East of Payson)

Description: Escape the summer heat! Hike along Christopher Creek and into forested See Canyon; there will be plenty of vegetation - ferns, flowers, pine and oak trees and cooler temperatures. Most of the hike is easy with the last 1/3 a steeper assent up to the top of the Mogollon Rim. We’ll have lunch at the top before heading back down.
Difficulty: Moderate, Total Distance: 7 miles (5 hour total hike time)
Start Elevation: 6200 ft, Elevation Gain: 1800 ft
Drive Time: 2 hours, Water to Bring: 2 liters
Meeting Time/Place: 7:00am - Pyle Recreation Center
Leader: Ron
Minimum Attendees Required: 3
RSVP By: Friday, August 23, 7:00pm
Directions to Trailhead: Proceed up the Beeline highway through Payson, take a right onto 260 East, then take a left at the Christopher Creek exit.  Take a right on to Forest Road 284 and drive to the trail head at the end.
Special Instructions: I like to carpool, but if anyone wants to meet at the trailhead, let me know. Directions are shown in this trip report. Also, it often rains for a short time in the afternoons in the Payson area so bring a light poncho or rain shell. Bring lunch/trail snacks.

Not sure what to bring? Checklists are available here.

Great hike, Ron. Thanks so much. That was a beautiful trail and nice and challenging. And as Debbie said, a great group of Souls to enjoy it with.

Had to change RSVP to :( Have to work on a emergency mold growth job. Looks like I'll have plenty of walnuts, almonds and other healthy snacks for my next hike. The AZ Mushroom Club was up in the White Mtns last month with over 50 people and surprisingly for the wettest July on record since the late 1800's not even enough were found for a decent meal.

Yes, I'll be at Target on Shea & the Beeline by 7:15. I'll be in a white sedan due north of the main entrance doors to Target near Shea. Reply here if you plan to meet me there and I'll e-mail you my cell phone number. Looking forward to it!

Hi Ron - doesn't look like anyone else is planning on being at the Target. It looks like we have 8 hikers total. If there's a seat in a car, can you have 1 car stop to get me? If cars turn out to be full, no problem. I'll drive. You and I can text in the morning if that's ok to see what's happening. -Delisse

Hi Ron. Pulled up the forecast for the area and Saturday it's 50% chance of storms and in the evening 60%. When and how do you call it seeing as how we're hiking in a canyon susceptible to flash flooding?

Hi Ronald. Good to know. I'm in. I mind lightning and flash flooding but don't mind getting wet. Heading up today. Guess I'll meet you all at the trailhead in the morning, say around ten a.m. or ten thirty? I've got Ronald's cell and mine is[masked]-3303. Thanks for planning this, Ron.

That shouldn't be a problem, though I'm not sure if we'll be able to carry you're bike (there are places to lock it at Pyle).

I'd advise bringing rain gear, and a spare change of clothes in case we do get wet. A Russell mentioned, a typical August day at this location.

Hike Weather Update: Overcast, scattered T'Storms with probability of rain reduced to 40% (50% at 8PM), Temp ~84, Dew Pt 54, UV 4 (low:0-12 scale) and RH ~ 33% (if not raining-LOL) or in other words-a typical summer day at the Rim.

I was looking for camping in the area. I found a map for See Canyon in the Highline National Recreation Area Trail number 184. I'll let you all know if I'm going up early or not as I'm fond of carpooling as well. If anyone has suggestions to nice spots up there that are safe I'm open. Thanks.

Hi Jane-Clare, I like the Horton Creek Campground. If you're looking for dispersed camping (no restrooms or others too close by), Renee in our group recommended that I go to Horton Creek Trailhead, walk down about 1/3 mile and take a right towards the creek. Camping permitted along the creek. Good luck. See you Saturday morning at the trailhead.

The hike is next week! I know of one person who will be meeting us at the trail head. If anyone else is planning to meet at any other place than at the Pyle recreation center in Tempe at 7:00 am, let me know in advance to make arrangements.

I'm planning on getting a bit to eat before we head back down to PHX after the hike. There are a couple of restarants right at the end of the forest road in Christopher creek. The Landmark is just up the road, and its pretty good.

    See you all next week!

Hi, Ron, change of plans. I'm not camping this weekend, so see you Saturday morning along the Beeline. I'll be at the Target at Shea along the Beeline Hwy at 7:15 on Sat if you guys wouldn't mind calling me as you drive by. Sorry but if i I go to Pyle that adds 50 miles to my day. Looking forward to the hike.
