Battleship Mountain! (Canyon Lake N.E. of Apache Junction)

Description: This hike is a variation of one of my favorites (the very scenic La Barge Canyon- pictures from last year). Looming over that canyon is the enormous Battleship Mountain. The trail starts across from the Canyon Lake Marina. It will climb about 700 feet over the first mile and provide great views of the lake and of Weaver's Needle. The trail then descends steeply to La Barge Creek and continues up and around to the backside of the mountain. The moderate rating is for those that will stop at the saddle and the difficult rating accommodates those who will make the final scramble up to the top. I am guessing about 7 hours round trip including lunch on the mountain. Let’s tag that peak!
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult

Total Distance: 9-10 miles

Start Elevation: 1600ft

Elevation Gain: 1000ft

Water to Bring: 3 liters

Drive Time: 50 minutes

Alternate Meeting Time/Place: 8:30 am, Canyon Lake Marina (about 15 miles north on 88 from 60)

Estimated Return Time: 5:00 PM (or 6:30 PM for anyone joining for a beverage/eats at the Marina after the hike).

Minimum Attendees Required:

Special Instructions: If you meet at Canyon Lake Marina, you will park at the hikers parking area right at the entry gate. There will be optional drinks and eats on the deck of the Canyon Lake Marina which was fun after last year’s excursion. Bring your camera!

Thank you! I didn't now I had it in me to hike 13.5 miles to include rock climbing, scrambling on a narrow ledge and bouldering. That was the best hike by far with perfect weather and perfect company!

    Hi Soles,

After much debate on the weather situation I think it is best to march on for tomorrow vs. Sunday which would mean creek flooding for sure. We will see how far we get and if we do not feel it is safe to get on the wrong side of certain creek crossings we will head back and have an early lunch and a few drinks at the Marina. It is still a nice hike up and over the mountain and down to the creek regardless. I will be at pyle at 730 or see you at the lake trailhead at 830.If you are running late[masked]-5273. Or cancel online if you cannot make it. Thanks! See you in the morning. Mark

I'll be at Pyle! If anything we can hike a little enjoy the beauty of wet scenery and eat and drink. Always a good combo!

Yes, we'll be adventurous yet still prudent. And with Plan B at the Marina, we've got our bases covered. See you 7:30 at Pyle.

    Hi Soles,

Meetup has been down so I have not been able to post. Tomorrow's forecast is 100% rain with up to 3/4 inch of rain throughout the day. It has been very dry so I am thinking the washes won't flood out but that is of course a concern. We can go out, hike as far as we like, and based upon the weather do the full hike or just the parts we can. OR we could move the hike to Sunday. I will keep looking at the weather and post again tonight but if you all have thoughts please let me know. At this moment we are still on for tomorrow. Either way, you will want to wear layered rain hiking clothes - poncho etc. Watch for another post tonight from me. Mark

I also can't make Sunday.. But understand if you need to move it.

Looks like I've got some work to do tomorrow, will have to pass.

That will change as it always does. I'm love the rain. Irma and I have experience hiking the rain...so bring it on.

We always hike rain or shine :) keep an eye on the weather and bring a rain cover to be prepared. It was the same last year at this time and we got 5 minutes of rain. All good

I think they're talking t-storms tomorrow possibly. I'll bring my rain gear and a spare change of clothes and see how bad it gets..

      February 28, 2014

  • Joshua E.

There is a 70% chance of rain on Saturday, will we still be doing the hike if it rains?

    February 25, 2014

  • Mark G.

    Hi Soles,

It looks like we have a full hike. The forest service limits group size to 15. I will go ahead and expand to 20 now and if we are still more than 15 by the end of the week we will just break into two groups. It should be a lot of fun. I will post any final details later this week. Mark
