Fossil Springs - Tonto National Forest (Near Strawberry)

Description: Hike with us to discover an oasis where natural springs pump out thousands of gallons of crystal clear 72-degree water every minute right here in the desert. The trail down (and then back out) is wide but somewhat steep and rocky in places. The beginning of the trail is mostly desert but as we descend into the canyon the vegetation changes until we are finally amongst tall Sycamores, Oaks, ferns, and wild blackberry bushes. At the bottom of the canyon, we will swim in a series of picturesque pools and dive off of rock platforms for the brave ones among us.  We’ll also eat a picnic lunch probably spending about an hour or two by the pools.  The hike out is mostly uphill, strenuous, exposed to the sun, but worth every ounce of effort.

Difficulty: Intermediate

Total Distance: 8 miles

Start Elevation: 5,580 ft.

Elevation Gain: 1,391 ft.

Water to Bring: 3 liters

Drive Time: 2 hours

Estimated Return Time:  6:00 PM

Minimum Attendees Required: 3

Special Instructions: There is no water or facilities at the trailhead. Bring your water bottles filled.  Bring a lunch to enjoy at the swimming hole and an optional swim suit, towel & water shoes like Tevas or Keens.  You can just hop in with your quick-dry hiking clothes as you will drip dry very quickly on the hike out.  It is a cool swimming hole, so you won’t want to miss swimming in it. No entry fees; however, you’ll need some money if you’re joining us for a cold beverage/snack in Strawberry on the way home.

To all the hikers on the Springs hike, I enjoyed your company and conversation. It was nice the see all the members of the club and it was nice to see the "new bees" that join us. Thanks to all of you for being part of this wonderful hike.

I will have printed directions for our drivers leaving from Target on Sunday morning. In case you need them, directions to the Trailhead - from the Target on Shea in Fountain Hills, take AZ 87 N for 79.5 miles to Strawberry, Arizona; left at the Strawberry Lodge onto Fossil Creek Rd / Forest Road 708 for 4.6 miles. I estimate we will be at the trailhead at 8:45 am. See you there!

Hi Delisse-Cathi Crouse, myself and my +1 (friend Lori) are meeting you at the trailhead since we all live in the far NW valley. I have room for one more if anyone else lives in NW Valley. Would you please give me your phone # and time to meet at trailhead and if you have a link to the trailhead (special directions)?? Thanks, Barb

A good idea might be to put "Strawberry Lodge, Strawberry, AZ" into your navigation or maps.google. I've written out directions from the Target above.

Our hike is this weekend. You're going to love this swimming hole. Please bring the items listed under "Special Instructions" above. You may also want a pair of goggles to see the fish and rock formations under water. (2) Some of us plan on stopping for dinner after our hike at THAT Brewery, 3270 N. AZ Hwy 87, mile marker 267, Pine, AZ. Join us. (3) We'll see you in the parking lot of Target on Shea & AZ 87. Follow the line of parking spaces directly north of the main entrance to find us in the large parking lot. See you bright and early Sunday morning.

To the hikers going on the Fossil springs hike. I am on the waiting list for this hike. If you are on the list to go and now you can't make it, please remove your name from this hike so I can go. Thank you in advance for your attention to my request.

Our hike / swim adventure is soon! We have a wait list. For those who have replied yes please make sure you are definitely attending and you are ready to face the 4 mile trek uphill. It's do-able for intermediate level hikers and well worth th effort. Oasis in the desert!
