Sierra Nevada Adventure – A 6 day Backpack Trip - California

Description: A backpacking/camping adventure in the Sierra Nevada Mountains! On Sunday September 2nd we will drive to Lone Pine California (8 hour drive) and spend the night in a motel. On Monday morning (Labor Day) a short drive to the trailhead and a full day ascent up the mountains. The eastern slopes are much steeper than the west side so with a fairly strenuous full day hike, we will reach the high elevation back country (8 miles, 3500’ elevation gain) and set up base camp at 3rd lake. We will go on day hikes Tuesday and Wednesday to a glacier and the upper lakes and then head back down on Thursday. We will spend Thursday night in Lone Pine before heading back to Phoenix Friday morning. Trip details here.
Difficulty: Difficult (due to backpacking/elevation gain and 3 nights camping)
Distance RT: 8 miles each way to base camp, plus 3-4 mile day hikes.
Elevation Gain: 3,500 (base camp) 5,000 total with day hikes.
Drive Time: 8 hours each way, Water to Bring: 2-3 liters plus water filter
Meeting Time/Place: 8:00 am, Pyle Recreation Center
Leaders: Mark and Eric
RSVP By: As soon as you are able to hold your spot – limit 8 -  $100 non refundable deposit required 30 days in advance.
Special Instructions: We will have a planning meeting to go over equipment and packing requirements this summer. To ensure a great hike experience this backpacking trip will be limited to reasonably experienced hikers with at least one backpack experience. Monday September 2nd is Labor Day, so 4 only days vacation required.

Just checked the weather lnk. Highs in the 50s lows at night upper 30s. Perfect hiking weather especially after a long hot summer!! And partly cloudy but no predicted rain so far. :)

Packing - looks like we have the minimums of the shared items. If in doubt bring things along and we can leave a few things in the cars. Since this is a campfilre restricted area, try and bring something for light at night. I have a small 45 lumen light. Don't forget the DEET and a poncho just in case.
Water - I agree Cindy a water filter weighs a lot less than the water itself. I watched a couple of youtube videos and that stream and the lakes are perenial. All for now. I will post again Saturday but please let me know if you have any questons.

Does anyone have one of the Spot trackers that they're bringing?

    August 26, 2012

    • Mark G.

Hi Nick, I do not have a GPS spot tracker. If anyone else would perhaps Cindy? Did you get the California map software? Jeff does not have it. I am still looking for an improved map over what we have although it is a pretty defined trail. Let us know if you have and can print out. I do have a government link to more detailed maps but need to know the coordinates for the map search and have not taken the time yet. Mark

Let me know if you have a preference and I will see about cancelling 1 room to save money. I do not have a preference - but I do snore :). Susan send me and Duane your address. My townhouse is 4805 E. Euclid Ave, #3. Phx, AZ 85044. I will post again later this week to see if we need anything else. Mark

Confirmed our permit today. Jeff put a weather link on the site.
Susan, please send your address to my personal email so I may map quest directions to your house.
Still not 100% sure but there may be campfire restrictions so we will need to bring a few more “jet boils” in case (I am still cooking my brats even if in the Jet boil…). Also try and bring a little something for light at night. I have a small 45 lumen lamp… All for now. Mark

    Hi Sierra Soles,
    I met with Cindy and Nick earlier this week. It looks like we are just about ready to go. A few new details;
Driving; Both Duane and Cindy have volunteered to drive. Logistically, if Cindy does she could go to Susan’s pick her up and meet us on I10 out west to caravan. But Duane has a larger vehicle. Cindy, you are new to the group so leaving this up to you. Just reply to say Duane or you driving and we are good to go. Thanks to both for volunteering.
Itinerary – East side meet at 6:00 AM at Mark’s leave 6:15 AM. Then to Susan’s or along I10 on the west side at 7:00 AM.

Sharing: We should need 2 water filters, 2- jet boils, 3-4 hanging bags for food storage up in the trees and the ropes, a wonder bucket to haul water, and some means for cooking – grill/propane/the first night BBQ theme (any ideas?). Post to let us know what you can bring to share. I will bring 1 water filter and 1 jet boil. Elevation - the starting elevation is approximately 7000 feet and campsite around 10,000 (so think Arizona snowbowl flagstaff). Expect temperature at sunrise around 35-40 degrees. I have a sleeping bag liner I can share if anyone needs. Jeff adding a weather link for us to the main description soon. All for now. Mark

Hi Cindy, Thanks for joining in on our trip. I have met you before on one of your Dreamy Draw hikes. Nick missed the planning meeting so we are setting up something for him as well. Looks like Monday after work is best so far at Star Bucks at 101 and Ray. Not sure where you come from or if that works for you. Let us know. You can also email or call me - [masked][masked]-5273. Hi soles, setting up a meeting to go over the Sierra trip details - trail and side trips, what to bring, what we can share, food planning etc. Let me know if you are available Saturday 7/14 or Sunday 7/15. Meet for dinner somewhere? Jeremy please confirm you can come up from Tucson for this on the weekend. The other option is next week if that works better. Also want to collect the $100 deposits to lock in the trip. PLease reply to let us know what works best for you - date - times etc. Thanks!

Eric got the permit for overnight camping - limit is 9. so I am changing the trip limit to 8 so we only have to take 2 vehicles. We have also reserved a couple of hotel rooms just past Lone Pine for Sunday and Thursday night - $90 per night - 2 beds per room. As more people sign up we will make additional reservations and figure out who and how many per room (2 per room is my preference but am open to more if some want a more economical option).

    Hi Nick,

The $100 will be applied towards gas, permits, and motel before and after the hike in. It also helps make sure we have a set group for planning, car pooling etc. Once we get all the details of the trip posted later this spring we will ask for the $100 to lock in your reservation.
