Pyramid Trail - South Mountain (Phoenix/Ahwatukee)

Description: Nested in the southwest portion of South Mountain, the Pyramid trail is still unknown to many who frequent the various trails of S. Mountain. The trail begins as an easy stroll just yards from residential area and after about 1 mile, our stroll turns to moderate hiking through a series of switchbacks and a saddle and then more switchbacks until it junctions with the National Trail. We wander and take pictures and turn around at a faster pace that when we started (gravity does it, no need to try), to our vehicles and on to Loco Patron it is. Who's in?
Difficulty: Moderate, Total Distance: 6 miles
Start Elevation: 1260 ft., Elevation Gain: 1350 ft.
Drive Time: 15 minutes, Water to Bring: 2 liters
Meeting Time/Place: 8am, Loco Patron
Directions: Parking is limited to 20 spots at the trailhead so it will be best to meet at Loco Patron and carpool over. The quickest way to get there is I10 south towards Tucson Pecos road west (where the 202 loop starts) to 16th street north and just east on Chandler Blvd. We can send directions to the trailhead if anyone wants to go directly there but there may not be space and parking is not allowed in the residential neighborhood.
Estimated Return Time: 12pm
Leaders: Irma, Mark
Minimum Attendees Required: 4
RSVP By: Friday, January 11, 7pm
Special Instructions: Bring trail snacks. We will need to carpool as parking is limited and parking is not allowed in the neighborhood. Dogs must be on leash. Let's meet at Loco Patron and when we return we can go there for a drink and food.

Nice hike! Turned out to be adventurous since we changed the route a bit on the way back. Good exercise range from cardio on going up to working on your quadriceps during descending. Wonderful morning with sunny views on the city, little cave and trail “rocks”. Fun teammates!

We opted to extend this hike into a loop. The Pyramid Trail was better than I expected from a local hike. It turned out to be a lot of fun. The company was great. Thanks Irma and Mark for organizing it.

    Hi Soles,

Weather forecast is 35 at trailhead start time with little to no wind and sunny. Up to 40+ by end of the hike so not that bad. Plus we will be hiking and making lots of heat within :) Wear layers. Warm coffee to follow back at the restaurant. See you in the morning. Mark

Carpool is at Loco Pactron. We will send cell phone numbers to all confirmed attendees. Remember that parking at trailhead is limited. Hopefully, we will be the sole souls parking there at that time. :-)
