Pt of Rocks/Brunswick to Harpers Ferry & Back (very difficult)

  • April 13, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Long hikers will start at Point of Rocks and hike to Harpers Ferry and back (28 miles; 5.8 blisters), with the option of going up to 4 miles past the start before returning (for up to 36 miles total; 7.4 blisters). Short hikers will start at Brunswick and hike to Harpers Ferry and back (14 miles; 3 blisters), with the option of going to Point of Rocks (21 miles total; 4.4 blisters). The hike will afford you many beautiful views of the Potomac River, let you observe wildlife and wildflowers, and let you explore (a little bit) historic Harpers Ferry.

To carpool, meet at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station's Kiss & Ride Lot (http://tinyurl.com/bdnkqax). Long hikers meet at the Metro station at 7 am or in the parking lot along the towpath at Point of Rocks by 8:15am (http://tinyurl.com/b6sqgqm); short hikers meet at the Metro station at 8:45 am or in the parking lot near the towpath under the MD 17 bridge in Brunswick by 10 am  (http://tinyurl.com/aqa6yvj).

Bring food and drink; you may also buy food in Harpers Ferry. You’ll proceed at your own pace and you may stop (or not) anytime to eat. This hike occurs rain or shine, cold or warm, so dress appropriately. Leaders are Michael Darzi [masked], [masked]) and Gary Kosciusko.

Although open to all, this hike is part of a series of training hikes leading up to the One Day Hike (ODH)—100 or 50 km along the C&O Canal-on April 27, 2013. Registration for the ODH is currently closed because it has reached the maximum number of registrants; it may reopen as cancellations are received. See www.onedayhike.org for more information.

Hi there - I'd like to join you on the short one tomorrow - don't have a car but does someone have a space in theirs at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station's Kiss & Ride Lot at 8.45?

Yes, there should be enough space.

I hate to do this so last minute, but my boss just asked me to work tomorrow. I'm disappointed because this hike sounds like tons of fun...

    21 mile for me.

I was wondering - the description mentions that this is a difficult hike. Is that based purely on the distance, or is it also difficult terrain? I feel okay with 14 miles, but probably am not ready if it's particularly difficult throughout those 14 miles.

The shorter distance is "moderate" and the trail is very easy. There wasn't enough room in the title to write "moderate, difficult, or very difficult, depending on the distance you do," which would describe this curious situation.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
