Memorial Day is looking good weather-wise, so here's a nice & easy way to spend a lazy, late-spring day for those of us trying hard to avoid the highways and byways of life on a holiday weekend. Designed for just such a day, this moderately paced 7-mile (~1500' elev change)circuit hike will be over shaded trails, around idyllic Clopper Lake, and along cool streams, and includes an extended lunch break to picnic and/or paddle, and maybe catch a few zzz’s. At 2.2 blisters, the hike is at the easy end of the moderate scale.
Bring a picnic lunch and (if desired) money for boat rental ($8-9/hr for canoe, row boat, kayak, or pedal boat) and maybe ice cream. Leashed pets are permitted. An optional visit to the conveniently located Dogfish Head AleHouse to cure what (ahem) ales us will follow to (ahem) top off the day.
Meet at 10 am at the Visitor Center, http://tinyurl.com/34aw5hr. (From I-270N, turn right at end of Exit 10 ramp. Go 2.1 mi. west on Rt. 117 [W. Diamond Ave, then Clopper Rd], and turn left into park, then right to Visitor Center.) Contact leader for a Shady Grove Metro pick-up if needed. Leader: Mike Darzi, [masked].
