12th Annual Commemoration of Antietam

  • December 7, 2013 · 11:00 AM

Join us Saturday, December 7, for our 12th Annual Commemoration of Antietam, one of the Civil War’s seminal battles. We will start with an afternoon hike that winds around Antietam National Battlefield, followed by an evening drive through the annual Memorial Illumination. We finish the night with an optional dinner at the historic Old South Mountain Inn.

This is a great way to learn about Civil War history. All are welcome, including kids and leashed dogs. If you are interested, let me ([masked]) know and I will send detailed information about the meeting time and place, and the event. To be included for the dinner, see below.

The Hike: The hike is a moderately difficult 11 miles (2.5 blisters) over mixed surfaces (roads, farms, woods) and rolling hills on one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields (www.nps.gov/anti/). Shorter options are available. Highlights of the hike include Antietam National Cemetery, the Visitor Center, and Antietam Creek, as well as the Dunker Church, West Woods, the Cornfield, North Woods, East Woods, Mumma Farm, the Sunken Road, and Burnside Bridge—all infamous as sites of brutal fighting.

The Illumination: The Illumination (www.nps.gov/anti/planyourvisit/luminary.htm) commemorates this bloodiest single-day battle in American history with 23,000 candles representing that day's casualties. During the hike, you'll see the many volunteers preparing the candles, making the Illumination all the more moving and impressive.

The Dinner: After the Illumination, many of us will have dinner at the Old South Mountain Inn (www.oldsouthmountaininn.com/), which dates from colonial times. Dinner participation is limited and requires a $20/person deposit that goes toward your dinner cost (i.e.; you get it back at the dinner). Reservation spots will be provided on a first-come basis and held only upon receipt of the deposit. Contact me ([masked]) if you would like to attend the dinner.

Cancellation Note: If the Illumination is cancelled due to weather, it will be rescheduled for December 14, as will the hike. There is no guarantee of dinner reservations for the alternate date, but deposits will be returned if you cannot attend the new date.

Thanks, Mike, for a well-organized hike on the battlefield grounds. It was so interesting to see all the dedicated volunteers arranging the thousands of luminaria on the fields despite the cold & windy weather. Very moving to drive through at the end of the day & see them all aglow in commemoration of those who died there. Very nice dinner at Old South Mountain Inn to end the day with the congenial company.

Glad you were made the long trip and enjoyed the day. I hope you had a good drive back in very nasty weather.

A well planned and organized hike, with advance strategic planning (cars parked at the head of the line for the Antietam Illumination drive) and just in time timing (finished the hike 30 minutes prior to the start of the Illumination), all with an interesting and diverse group of attendees. Great way to spend a brisk December day!

It was cold, but at least we missed the sleet and freezing rain. A beautiful winter day! For the full photo album see http://goo.gl/ElhE0e.
