Cabin John Stream Valley to Carderock (moderate)

  • Feb 23, 2014 · 8:30 AM

This 12 mile moderate (3 blisters), linear hike explores the Cabin John Valley of Suburban Maryland, and from Union Arch Bridge, continues through the 7 locks area on the C&O Canal to Carderock Recreation Area. The Cabin John trail is mostly wooded, on gentle terrain, and popular among local bikers, runners, and dog walkers. It is periodically connected via sidewalks and road crossings.

To carpool, meet at the Carderock Recreation Area: After entering the Carderock area and going under the canal, turn right and park in the first lot on the left (http://goo.gl/CnYeFV). A car shuttle is required for this linear hike.

Leaders: Vicky Hsu 443/[masked] or [masked] and Mike Darzi [masked].

Thanks. He is better now. He is over 13 and gave me a scare. So glad to see him acting himself again. I am sure all you had a great time on the hike.

Except for the mud, it was a perfect day for a winter hike. Here is the full photo album for the hike: http://goo.gl/7r1JPU.

Is this a good hike for someone who is new to hiking? I do walk a lot in the suburbs, but 12 miles sounds like A LOT to me?

okay, thanks for answering -- can you suggest some easy hikes in the area where I can practice?

Look for regional, state, or national parks (eg, Great Falls in MD & VA, Rock Creek, Greenbelt). There are sure to be many near you (DC, NoVA, MD subs). Always take into account hilliness (elevation change) as well as distance. A good hiking book for the area is a great place to start. There's a wide selection at outfitters like REI, EMS, HTO. Start easier than you think you can do (5 miles max) and work up. Carry water, map, phone. Dress appropriately, including footwear. Go with at least another person. Email me directly if you have more q's.
