Camp Hoover and Waterfalls in SNP (moderate)

  • Sep 29, 2012 · 8:30 AM

This 10-mile loop hike with 3400' of elevation change (moderate, but almost difficult at 2.4 blisters) will cover an unusual route that will include two waterfalls (Dark Hollow and Big Rock Falls), a visit to (everyone's favorite) President Hoover's Rapidan Camp (aka, Camp Hoover), and a walk through Big Meadows' big meadow. There are some steep and rocky sections on the hike, although they are short.

Bring lunch and water; optional dinner at a favorite veggie restaurant is a real possibility. Meet at Vienna Metro's north Park & Ride lot (http://tinyurl.com/9z2pb9v;
not the south side, not the Kiss & Ride, not the garage).

About the camp: Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry, purchased Rapidan Camp (www.nps.gov/shen/historyculture/rapidancamp.htm) in 1929 and they used it as a summer weekend retreat until they donated it to the park in 1932. It was superseded as a Presidential retreat by Camp David. Three of the 13 original buildings survive and are maintained by the park.

    Great hike as always, Mike! The tour inside the Brown House was an unexpected treat.

    I would also like to ask, what happens if it is raining on Saturday? I am going to be leaving very early (around 6am, I am taking the metro), since I live in Silver Spring so once I am on my way I will not have the opportunity to check for cancellation anymore. Thank you.

      Verolee, Glad you made it and as you can see, we had great weather. For future reference, I rarely cancel an event due to weather, unless it creates a dangerous situation there or for the drive over.

    Hello, can I catch a ride with anybody? Also, this would be my first time. Just in case I cannot find you at Vienna Metro's north Park & Ride lot for any reason, can I call you Mike? What is your number? When do you think we will be getting back?
    Thank you.

    Hi Giuliana, The route is different from the standard hike--longer and a little more difficult. It is not appropriate for a 12-year old; I hope she can join us on a future hike. There is no limit and no commitment in reserving.

    Mike,
    I've done a shorter version of this hike back in July. (7's something miles). Young ranger at the Hoover's Camp was very knowledgeable. Would like to come on the 29th with my 12 yr old daughter but not sure yet if the29th is good for us.
    Is there a limit of people for this hike in terms of reservation?
