This 10-mile loop hike with 3400' of elevation change (moderate, but almost difficult at 2.4 blisters) will cover an unusual route that will include two waterfalls (Dark Hollow and Big Rock Falls), a visit to (everyone's favorite) President Hoover's Rapidan Camp (aka, Camp Hoover), and a walk through Big Meadows' big meadow. There are some steep and rocky sections on the hike, although they are short.
Bring lunch and water; optional dinner at a favorite veggie restaurant is a real possibility. Meet at Vienna Metro's north Park & Ride lot (http://tinyurl.com/9z2pb9v;
not the south side, not the Kiss & Ride, not the garage).
About the camp: Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry, purchased Rapidan Camp (www.nps.gov/shen/historyculture/rapidancamp.htm) in 1929 and they used it as a summer weekend retreat until they donated it to the park in 1932. It was superseded as a Presidential retreat by Camp David. Three of the 13 original buildings survive and are maintained by the park.
