Apologies, but we had to cancel this beginner backpacking series. It will be rescheduled for next spring.
This two-night trip (rated 2 blisters) is designed for beginners, with shorter daily mileage and a reasonable elevation profile, enabling students to test out gear, and practice techniques and planning. Check for more information, including exact location, in late Sep or contact leaders.
Cost will be about $15 plus travel expenses and food. Participation is limited and participants must be 16 or older. Although open to all, first dibs will be given to students of the classes (see below).
This is the first of three Wandering Soles October mini vacations full of fall foliage colors.
The trip is associated with two preceding classes. The first class (Sep 30) teaches how to plan a trip, including trip selection, route planning, use of maps/GPS, Leave No Trace basics, water planning (purification options & need), first-aid kits, and emergency planning.
The second class (Oct 7) covers basic gear (backpack, tent, sleeping bags & pads, boots, clothing, etc) and cooking gear (stoves, water filters) & food. We'll provide tips on fitting, buying, usage, and packing light, and hands-on demonstrations.
Class size is limited to 20 people; students must be 16 or older. Each class costs $25 for expenses; payment (check or PayPal) in advance will confirm your spot. You may register for either or both classes. Classes will be given is the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veteran's Place, in downtown Silver Spring, three blocks from Metro and one block from free parking.
Attendance for classes and trip is limited and requires registration. (Contact Liz to register.) Leaders: Liz Guertin ([masked]) & Mike Darzi ([masked]).
