A winter island hike to make you yearn for summer! It starts with a three-mile loop (the "candy" part of the "lollypop" route) around the Terrapin Beach Park/Nature Area, which includes a tropical-like sandy beach, marshlands, and expansive views of the Chesapeake Bay, with duck blinds and a gazebo thrown in for good measure. That loop will be followed by an out-and-back, at-your-own-pace hike along Kent Island's Cross Island Trail (the "stick" of the "lollypop"). You can walk up to about 4.5 miles on this beautiful and relatively new, paved, hiker/biker trail, or turn around sooner (or later) if you want to do less (or more) than a total of 12 miles (2.4 blisters or moderate).
Bring two quarts of water and a bag lunch or heavy snacks. For those interested, we'll have a mid-afternoon lunner (lunch/dinner) after the hike at Rustico Restaurant (www.rusticoonline.com) in historic (and very tiny) Stevensville, MD.
To carpool, meet at 9 am at the New Carrolton Metro Station Park & Ride Lot #2, near the entrance of that lot (www.tinyurl.com/a25laro). Note that if you take the Metro, this lot is on the south/east side of the station (toward Garden City Dr), just across the Kiss & Ride lot. To meet at the trailhead, be at the dirt parking lot (www.tinyurl.com/bctu7dt; 191 Log Canoe Cir, Stevensville, MD) by 9:45 am. In case of inclement weather, please check here for last-minute changes before leaving for the hike.
Leaders are Gary Kosciusko and me.
