Life is a hike/picnic

Solemates,

I’m sure you’ve been waiting with bated/baited breath for information about this Sunday’s (June 8) hike/picnic event. Whether your breath has abated (not too much I hope) or you like worms (not too much I hope), I’ll never know how we got into a discussion about Shakespeare.

This hike/picnic event is held every year to celebrate the One Day Hike (ODH) that is (surprisingly enough) also held every year, but much more tightly. The h/p event is of course open to all and you may join us for either or both parts, or neither parts.

THE HIKE: Meet at 9:30 am at Carderock for the out-and-back hike along the C&O Canal towpath to Great Falls of up to 10 miles. Bring a bottle of water/sport drink to hike; it promises to a very warm day. The hike will be lead by Paul Elliott and Gary Kosciusko, and covers a beautiful section of the canal and the Potomac River. You set your own pace, and determine the distance by your turnaround pointthat's 2 blisters (barely moderate) if you go all the way, or 0 blisters if you turn around without taking a step. The idea is to return to the starting point by noonish for the second part (my favorite) of the event, which will help replenish any calories that may have gone their separate way on the hike.

THE PICNIC: Around noon, we’ll gather for the picnic back at the hike’s starting point. We’ll provide hotdogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, trimmings, bread, chips, and nonalcoholic beverages, along with paper and plastic ware; you may bring appetizers, side dishes, or desserts (or just your appetite). Russ Norfleet will do the honors on the grill. The picnic will also feature live, traditional Scottish/Irish music and dance by Fynesound (www.fynesound.com).

This event is sponsored by the ODH Planning Committee (www.onedayhike.org) of the Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (www.sierrapotomac.org; formerly, MWROP).

Directions are below. If you have any questions, let me know. Feel free to forward this message to others who may be interested.

In case you’re curious, for this year’s ODH, we had 357 registrants, 280 starters, 184 finishers, and 105 volunteers. If you’re interested in trying the ODH or volunteering for it in the future, chat someone up at the hike/picnic.

Cheers,

Mike
