Black Hill Waddle

Solemates,

Join us this coming Sunday, July 22, for a walk and a paddle, or “waddle” -- a great hot summer outing. Too bad it will cool off to the high 80’s, but bring a jacket if you’ve acclimatized to this summer.

We’ll start with a gentle 6-mile, three-loop hike (easy at 1.3 blisters) in a quiet, beautiful, and (fortunately) mostly ignored Ten Mile Creek area of Black Hill Regional Park. Highlights include lots of wildflowers, serene lake views, and lack of noise. We’ll also look for and identify invasive plants, and consider the havoc they wreaked. (I’m taking a class about them, so it’s my interest du jour.)

If you are up for it, we’ll then have lunch by the lake and rent boats (canoes, kayaks, or rowboats) and go for an afternoon swim. Boats are $8 per hour each, CC’s accepted, or bring your own boat.

Don’t forget lots of water and a bag lunch (if you are staying for the afternoon), or snacks. Also highly recommended are bug repellant, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, friends, and even friendly family, and several good movies. Meet at Shady Grove Metro’s east side Kiss & Ride (the side with the parking garages; http://tinyurl.com/dx2a4jh) at 9am.

It’s been a very interesting four weeks weatherwise since our last hike. I think that day was also one of the last under-90-degree day. Here are some pix to refresh the mind:

Cheers,

Mike
