Little Vatican

The Brookland section of DC is called "Little Vatican" because of the many Catholic institutions in the neighborhood. In commemoration of Valentine's Day (St. Valentine was a Catholic martyr before he became a Hallmark marketing ploy), we'll visit several of them, including the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family (http://www.ucns-holyfamily.org/index.php), the Blessed John Paul II Shrine (http://www.jp2shrine.org/jp/en/index.html), the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (http://www.nationalshrine.com/site/c.osJRKVPBJnH/b.4719297/k.BF65/Home.htm), and the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America (http://www.myfranciscan.org/). We'll start at the Ft. Totten Metro station, pass through one of Washington's oldest cemeteries, Rock Creek Cemetery (I know, it's Episcopalian, not Catholic, but they're known as "American Catholics"), where we'll visit the evocative memorial "Grief" by America's foremost sculptor, Auguste St. Gaudens (http://artseverydayliving.com/blog/2012/01/saint-gaudens/). Then we'll stop at the Ukrainian and papal shrines on our way to the National Shrine via the campus of the Catholic University of America. We'll have lunch in the Shrine's cafeteria before continuing on to the Franciscan monastery. The hike will end at the Brookland/CUA Metro station, one stop from the Ft. Totten station (or the hardy can make the 2-mile trek from the monastery back to our starting point).

Distance: 4 miles

Dogs: Allowed, leashed

Leader: Ken Meyercord [masked])

Directions: The Ft. Totten station is on the METRO Red Line (towards Glenmont) and the Green and Yellow lines (towards Greenbelt). If driving, take North Capitol Ave. to east on Riggs Rd. and follow the signs to the station (there is free parking on weekends).

I know some of you were interested in Saint- Gauden. Here is where you can find his work in the NGA: http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/Collection/locationview.102494.html?room=M-066&ngaObjectId=102494&pageNumber=1

This was my first walk with the group and I enjoyed it tremendously. I look forward to attending more WDH Meetups in the future.

Too bad I won't be able to go on this outing with all of you. I have to attend a work-related meeting unfortunately.

Decided to cancel because not sure if all the sidewalks are cleared and how much slush and water there will be.
