Washington DC Area Cohousing Message Board › VISITABILITY updates
Best wishes in the new year!
Work continues in the DC City Council on B19-0250, the "Visitability Requirements Act of 2011." Coming up is a working group meeting to share recommendations and discuss potential revisions to the legislation. You can view the legislation as introduced at
If you haven't already checked out Oakcreek Cohousing Community, you might want to take few minutes to go to their website now. It took them 3 years from first meeting to breaking ground. If that's not record breaking, it must be close!
Here is what one of the organizers had to say about visitability, "We are an entirely roll-in community. We have ramps into the common house because it is an existing house that is two steps up from the surrounding terraine. All of the other homes have no steps and the walkways have no more than a 5% grade. Walkways are wide enough to acommodate a motarized chair or scooter...or even a golf cart for that matter. We want easy access no matter what happens as we age. The showers are walk-in with a lip just deep enough to keep the water in the shower. All bathrooms will be equipped with safety "balance bars" (we like this term better than "grab bars". If you have to grab - it's probably too late)."
Please join us for some slides and a lively discussion. You're especially invited to bring doubts or questions.
