Drink Beer and Learn Lockpicking

The Reddit monthly beer and lockpicking class is coming up on the first Wednesday of the month, 6:30 at The Boardroom in Dupont (1737 Connecticut), as usual.

Intro to lockpicking talk starts at 6:45.
If you're new, this is for you!

If you've ever been interested in picking up the skill (security folks, mechanically inclined, mechanically dis-inclined, looking to up your geek cred, secretly want to be James Bond, whatever), now's your chance.

We will have all the materials you need to get started or, if you've tried in the past, we can help you pick up where you left off. No experience necessary, and feel free to bring a friend.

I and several other awesome volunteer instructors be there for a couple of hours or so. Happy hour prices until 7:00. We'll be at the upstairs bar. I'm Preston, I'll be the guy with the dark beer and a toolbox of locks.

FAQ:
+ Under 21 and kids with parents allowed. Let me know when you RSVP.
+ Lockpicks are for sale. Never any obligation to buy, always welcome to borrow ours. That's how we roll. 20$ cash.
+ Can't make it? Don't worry, there's always next month. Get on the list and get notified first by emailing toool-dc+[masked].

When is the intermediate/advanced class coming up?

And do you guys have tips for the locks you get stuck on? Try and try again or new picks or what kind of techniques do you utilize?

The advanced lockpicking class is still in the works; we're trying to find a time and venue that works. If you have suggestions for a place that we can get 8-10 people together for a non-shouted conversation, maybe with a big screen TV, I'm all ears. We're thinking maybe a late Sunday morning "bagels and locks" somewhere.

As for getting stuck, everyone has locks they can't seem to pick today/this week/this month. Patience and perseverance is the only real key, but distracting yourself (talking and picking, TV and picking, etc.) can help you be more patient. Give it a shake to hear how many pins you're actually setting; could be closer than you know. Changing tension to counterclockwise can help on some locks (reverses the pick order). If you think you're overpicking and jamming it, switch from a hook to a half diamond, which will make you less prone to lifting that extra unnecessary millimeter. And feel free to bring it in, we'll all take a crack at it. Good luck!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
