Hike Mount Mitchell

  • May 17, 2014 · 8:00 AM

Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak on the eastern seaboard of North America, and home to a North Carolina state park of the same name. There are a series of trails (rated easy to strenuous) around the summit that can be hiked in a 5.6 mile loop. If we meet at 8:00am and drive up we should have plenty of time to walk the trails, visit the park center, have lunch, and take in the view from the summit tower. Dinner on the way back for those who are interested.

But yes, we did Deep Gap trail...just not the whole way. Great overlooks. Didn't expect to see snow though :)

The trails were fantastic--alpine jungles of fir and rhododendron, moss and fern covered rocks, streams and wildflowers. The weather was a bit bothersome; cold and windy but not nearly as overcast as weather.com said it would be. We had great views from the summit and not a drop of rain! And there was a food service stand there that had delicious hot chocolate, which I deeply appreciated after that cold windy climb up. Nice gift shop too. It's a shame so many had to dro out. Mount Mitchell is one of those places everyone who resides in North Carolina ought to visit.

That's fine, as long as everyone had a good time. Gorges is a neat place, I reconed it last summer.

Jim did you decide what trail you are going on for this hike on Saturday? Where is everyone supposed to meet?

    May 13, 2014

    • Jim

The plan is to go up the Mount Mitchell Trail, US Forest Service Trail #190, length 5.6 miles, elevation change 3,684ft, rated as strenuous. Those who are driving up on their own (not meeting up at the Target parking lot on Rea Road) should go to the trailhead at the Briar Bottom Recreation Area. Those of us coming up from Charlotte will meet you there about 11:00. But see also the comment above, as the plan may change.

      May 13, 2014

    • Jim

And the plan did change. See above.

how do u think the weather will affect our views?

    May 15, 2014

    • Jim

You'll get a very, very good view of the clouds--perhaps from inside of one.

      May 15, 2014

  • Jim

OK folks, we have a plan! Turns out it is impractical to hike up the Mount Mitchell Trail (USFS #190) and shuttle back to our starting point, due to the fact that it's about an hour and a half round trip by road from the trailhead to the summit and back. I don't think anyone wants to wait around that long, either before our hike, SO.... we're going to do a loop of three trails, beginning at the park office and taking us up to the summit and back, for a total of about five miles. We will start from the park office no later than 11:00am, take the Old Mount Mitchell Trail (strenuous) for 2 miles to the summit, switch off to the Balsam Trail (easy) for a loop of 3/4s of a mile, then come back to the office on the 2 mile long Commissary Trail (easy). Should be a nice stretch of the legs, but not too difficult.

    May 15, 2014

  • Jim

Looks like the weather will be cooler and damper than we expected Saturday. High of only 50, with 30% chance of rain.

    May 14, 2014

  • Jim

I've been working on how we are going to ensure that we have vehicles waiting on us at the top of Mt. Mitchell when we finish our hike, so we can shuttle back to where we begin the hike. The problem is that the only way to get from where the hike ends (the top) back to where we began (where most people's cars will be) is a long, winding, very slow road down the mountain that could take a half hour or more one way, so we will need transportation to already be in place up top when we finish the hike. I plan to drive up there myself on Thursday and verify the trailhead, the parking situation, and the time it takes to shuttle from the trailhead to the summit parking lot. If it turns out that my original plan for the Mount Mitchell Trail is impractical for our group there are a few alternatives, such as a more level trail running from the park office to the summit and back. I will work that out on the ground Thursday when I get there and speak with the park rangers.

Latest weather forecast for Mt. Mitchell, Saturday May 17th. Mostly cloudy, high of 56, low of 42, 20% chance of rain. Looks like it's going to be cool and cloudy, and possibly a bit damp. Please prepare accordingly.

Forecast for Mt. Mitchell for Saturday, 17 May: Partly cloudy, high 58, low 41, chance of rain 10%. Also, thank you to all who have inquired about my back. It seems to be healing nicely (I was able to run and work out a bit today) and I believe it will be good to go by the 17th.

    • Jim

I understand. I'll miss you! But I wouldn't want anyone biting off any more than they are comfortable chewing. I'll know more after my recon on the 1st, but this does seem to be a pretty tough hike.

      April 21, 2014

    • Janet P

I'll be sure to look for your comments after you recon.

      April 22, 2014

  • Jim

If anyone is free on Thursday, May 1st and would care to come along, I plan to recon this hike on that day. From everything I've heard and read from others who've hiked this trail, it is a very strenuous hike, and I would like to try it myself before leading others on it. I will return with a more detailed description of the trail and a better idea of just how hard this will be.

    April 17, 2014

    • Loretta M.

Jim, I have also been reading up on this hike in several books and it seems there are quite a few options for hiking there. I too would like to recon and am available to go with you on 5/1.

      April 17, 2014

  • Janet P

Hey Jim! I will be curious to hear. Not sure I'm up for a SUPER strenuous hike.

Does anyone have plans to do the Mt Mitchell trail that starts at the campground and goes to the top of Mt Mitchell? I think the elevation gain is 3,600 ft over 6 miles.

    April 10, 2014

    • Jim

I haven't reconed this one yet, so I'm open to any and all ideas. The trail you describe sounds like the one I had in mind when I posted this hike; according to the guide book I use it starts near a bridge in a recreation area (could be the campsite), goes 5.6 miles , most of it up, up, up, getting pretty steep near the top, and has an elevation change of 3,684 feet. I'll hike that soon to make sure before I take the group out on it.

Hey Jim, have you ever been hiking in Montreat NC or the Appalachian Trail in Hot Springs? Some of the prettiest hiking I've ever seen!

    March 28, 2014

    • Jim

Montreat, no. Hot Springs, yes, but only where the trail goes down the sidewalk on Main Street! I have a photo of my wife standing on it right outside their public library (she's a retired librarian). I tell people my wife has hiked the entire width of the Appalachian Trail!
