glTF Update with Tony Parisi

Last fall, Fabrice Robinet showed off early work on a new JSON-based file format for WebGL . The idea is to export the art out of tools like Maya and Blender, ready for  rendering in a web-based or mobile app, without the extra information and file size bloat of other standard formats like COLLADA.

Fast-forward to today, and we now have glTF, a Khronos Group initiative to create the next-generation format standard. I will share an update and demos of the work I have been doing to build a glTF loader/viewer using Three.js, first previewed at SIGGRAPH last month.

Looks like we'll have a few other presenters, too. Dave A will show off a new editing system based on X3DOM... Kai Chang will show some LeapMotion WebGL... and our man Ken Russell will give the group a WebGL Working Group update.

Here I am building demos for people the age I was when I was developing the sort of stuff they learned on. And now I build my demos on the stuff they develop. A Curse? Or re-curse I've? Anyway, here's the link to the files I showed last night:
    https://github.com/jaanga/gestification/tree/gh-pages/projects/webgl-2013-08-22

If anybody needs/wants a double-click into any particular aspect feel free to just wave your hand. Literally or metaphorically - depending on your possession of a Leap Motion controller.

And, as always, I am in awe of tools such as WebGL, Three.js and glTF - not only because they are excellent tools but because the online dialog regarding their development is the conversation of such intelligent, civilized and devoted personalities. Thank you...

Great stuff. Leap demos... as always, Theo was mind-blowing! glTF got an excellent reception, which makes me very happy. We also got a surprise visit from the inimitable Mr.doob. Great to see you Ricardo!

Thanks to Adam, IGT and all speakers tonight.

It was amazing Tony. Thanks for setting the meet-up.I wanted to note that for those people looking for assets, GitHub has over[masked] obj files. Instead of downlading each one of them, you can see them in your browser with this open source extension I wrote: https://chrome.google....

Theo's interface was the most developed Leap application I've seen. Incredible work.

    Hi Tony,

I am living in San Jose. Do you have a realtime video stream or shall you post the video on internet after the conference?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Dave/Damon - who is doing the Rift stuff? Can we get them on the line? Adam wants a description of this meetup, I need a topic. If I don't hear tonight, I'm making one up.

Damon - go for it! Who knows people at Leap Motion? There is also OUYA, which I saw a great Youtube video of. We could ask the Ludei folks if they have a version of that working they can show off...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
