Last fall, Fabrice Robinet showed off early work on a new JSON-based file format for WebGL . The idea is to export the art out of tools like Maya and Blender, ready for rendering in a web-based or mobile app, without the extra information and file size bloat of other standard formats like COLLADA.
Fast-forward to today, and we now have glTF, a Khronos Group initiative to create the next-generation format standard. I will share an update and demos of the work I have been doing to build a glTF loader/viewer using Three.js, first previewed at SIGGRAPH last month.
Looks like we'll have a few other presenters, too. Dave A will show off a new editing system based on X3DOM... Kai Chang will show some LeapMotion WebGL... and our man Ken Russell will give the group a WebGL Working Group update.
