Columbus day weekend is peak foliage season. We do plan to have a long weekend of hikes, bike rides,  BBQ and bonfires! Saturday we'll have an easy hike and then head over to a nearby social event.  Sunday will be open to a moderate hike or a bike ride or the wonderful Fryeburg Fair is on the other side of Hurricane Mountain Road.

If you have never been to our house then this is an ideal weekend to make your first visit. The Wedeln Ski House is located on the Bartlet / N. Conway NH townline, close to the Cranmore Ski Area.  The house has hiking and biking trails right out the back side of the house. Accomodations are only $20 per night, bring your own bedding and toiletries.

Details on food and beverages to be sent out to "YES" RSVPS. There are also many great restaurants in nearby North Conway as well as plenty of tax free outlet shopping.

Mountain bike update:

MB tour will be 2-4 hrs, and trail will be decided by trip leader Rick P. depending on group. Trail choices include intermediate trails in Bartlett, or Red Tail trail (intermediate to advanced) off Hurricane Mtn Rd. Please leave a comment below if you wish to do the MB Tour.

It's being held on Saturday and Sunday starting at Noon. Admission is $10. http://attitash.com/events.html   Attitash - Hills & Hops 5K trail race at 9:15 A on Saturday. Registered online for $20, but you can always sign up at Attitash that morning for $25. The race takes place on the mountain, and according to the description, you run up, down, and across ski trails, so come prepared with proper footwear and clothing. That said, it's supposed to be 71 degrees in North Conway on Saturday, so it'll be a warm one.

Hi All, I am bringing my road bike in case there is time to fit a ride in. If anyone would like to bring their bike and join me... Wish the Bike for Books was on the roads instead of the woods!

Hi Theresa, My friend Cyndy (US on Meetup) has child care issues and cannot attend. She was the only other one I know who was doing the Bike for Books.

    Hi Annaliza,
I am driving up Friday night. Leaving from my office in Boston at 5pm. The only thing that might be a problem is I am not sure if I am coming home Sunday night or early Monday morning (7ish). My 15 year old has a fb game in the morning I want to go to. If that sounds okay, I'll pick you up.

    October 3, 2011

  • Annaliza

Hi all! Is anyone driving up from Boston Friday eve? I live in Brookline and need a lift :) Happy to chip in for gas, driving, etc...

    October 3, 2011

Saturday - George leads moderate hike, David B runs difficult hike.
Sunday - I will run a easy / moderate hike - then off to the Fryeburg Fair! George will be hiking difficult hike 1 and David B will run difficult hike 2...

    October 1, 2011

  • Mags

Right now there is a waiting list. I will know if we have more room on Wednesday night / Thursday AM.

    October 1, 2011

  • Jaux

Please tell me it's not too late to add a +1?

    October 1, 2011

  • G

George - i am in shape, but haven't hiked in a while, so perhaps your Sat. hike would be good for me.

    September 29, 2011

  • George F.

I will also be leading hikes on Saturday and Sunday if anyone is interested. I was planning to hike Mt Hale on Saturday, which will be a very reasonable 4.5 mile round trip. Sunday will be a bit more extreme, I am looking into a Zeland/Bonds traverse (almost 19 miles). Please let me know if you are interested in either hike and I will see everyone on Friday night!

Morning! I just logged on and paid - sorry to be so tardy - mac issues. I also dropped from 1 guest to 0 guests so someone from the wait list should be able to come off. I'm going to sign up for the bike fundraiser with the library and may hit the fair on Sunday if time allows - still trying to work off my son's drop off time on Sunday. I'll double check my email from your details. See you soon!!

    September 27, 2011

  • Mags

Hi - I just sent a detailed e-mail to all YES RSVPs - Please call or e-mail me with any questions, issues, or concerns.

    September 27, 2011

  • Jaux

If I make it off the waitlist, I'd like to do the more difficult hike on Saturday. I don't think I'll be able to hike on Sunday because I'll be working that night and will need to head back (unless I get up early and hike Kearsarge, which I may try to do). I may try to hike Kearsarge on Friday afternoon or evening as well... all depending on if I make it off the waitlist lol

    September 27, 2011

  • Regula

I'm interested in hiking Bald Faces or Sat. and possibly Castles on Sunday

    September 25, 2011

  • Mags

Hi Andrew, There will be a moderate hike. However, we will leave pretty early on Saturday. It would be better if you came up late Fri.
    Regards, Jonathan

I'd like to hike on Sat (moderate) and Sun (easy) provided the moderate hike on Sat is in fact moderate and not advanced. Thanks!

    September 22, 2011

  • Mags

Hi Karen, You are on the waitlist! Don't worry - hang in there. space opens up as we get closer to the date.

    September 22, 2011

  • Mags

    Hi Lauren - Absolutely!

    September 21, 2011

  • Mags

Thanks Joanna - That is really helpful.

    September 21, 2011

  • Joanna

P.S. (I've done the Bald Faces twice.) I would consider something in the 5-7 miles, 4-6 hour range (like Pierce or Eisenhower) to be more in the 'moderate' category. Just food for thought if have hikers along that are not used to hiking over 6 or 7 miles.

    September 21, 2011

  • Joanna

With all due respect to the hike leaders, the Bald Face loop - at 9.5 miles and 7-8 hours estimate - is rated as a difficult hike (rather than moderate). It can be a bit much if one is not an experienced hiker and the ledges up the South Face are a bit challenging, especially if one has a fear of heights. Yes, the pay off is spectacular and the ridge crossing from South to North is really neat, too.

    September 21, 2011

  • Mags

Update on Hiking Sat - Bald Faces can be done in 7 hours, however the group will want to slow down or stop just due to the beauty of this incredible place, so give it 8. If we don't go to the Crag then 7 again. I'll go South to North so when the spur to the Crag comes up we can decide with the group, go or not. Crag is only a peak on the list but incentive to come back and get it will be strong.

Hi Linda - I am checking with the hike leader and will let you know.
