SOLID Principles with Ben Amor

The SOLID principles are not exactly new thinking, but it's worth taking the time to go over this kind of thing occasionally. With the aid of some code samples from a completely fictitious online auction site I'll be going over the five principles and talking about how they interact with each other, as well as with other principles, patterns, and tools, and explaining how I think they make us into better developers.

Thanks Ben. The real world - oops I mean hypothetical world - code examples made the principles much easier to understand and also to see the value of the principles. Right - I'm off to look at some rather fat classes I have written...

Hey all, thanks for turning out on such a filthy night. It was really encouraging to see so many people there for a talk on code craftsmanship. Some links to resources:

A fantastic SOLID primer is http://lostechies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/pablos_solid_ebook.pdf

An interesting set of rules to have a go at building software using: http://www.bennadel.com/resources/uploads/2012/ObjectCalisthenics.pdf

An article on inheritance vs composition: http://lostechies.com/chadmyers/2010/02/13/composition-versus-inheritance/

Feel free to hit me up as well - pirate@. I'm always keen to talk about this sort of thing.

Great example of the strategy pattern as a solution to open/closed problem. Would be keen on slides too.

Alas I have to bail out. Ben will you be posting a slide deck anywhere?
