King Creole - New Orleans Style Dinner Party

Kaitlin and Sumit have very kindly offered to host this fabulous event at their house in Miramar.

A dinner party to celebrate the gorgeous home style cooking of American Deep South. Think gumbo, jambalaya, sticky rack or ribs, Mississippi mud pie..... the list goes on.

What you need to bring:

A dish that demonstrates deep south deliciousness and your tipple of choice.

Please post a note saying what you plan to bring in the comments box below so we don't end up with too many double up's.

Would be good to get a mix of veggie and non veggie food so everyone feels welcome.

This event is being held at a private house so the address will be emailed to attendees a few days before the event.

A BIG thank you to Kaitlin and Sumit for hosting.

Thank you all for coming! Sumit and I had a wonderful first experience hosting one of these events. I could not have asked for a more amazing table spread--the variety and quality of everyone's dishes was superb. I told Sumit that the meal tasted like "home," and the bread pudding even made me a bit emotional, as it is the dish my grandmother always makes. It was great to have so many lovely people over for a delicious meal, a dangerously good Mint Julep, and some laughs.

Good time had! Look forward to making more of a contribution next one i can get to!

Personally I feel that these events are about contribution to and sharing food, recipes, and cooking technique. Bringing wine or chipping in (ie. paying for someone else's effort ) isn't what I think these kind of events are about. I think we need to be careful about setting a precedent here. Happy for others' thoughts.

sorrry...pressed enter too soon...so have limited time for getting food together (but I will be bringing something in the food line - not as good as I'd like it to be if I had more time) . I wouldn't want to see people only bringing drinks or contributing in that way all the time, but just occasionally I don't think it's a problem. Mostly we end up with too much wine anyway if most people bring a bottle (those coming by themselves anyway) and so it helps to spread the cost and keeps the volumes to reasonable levels relative to the number of people turning up.

Point taken Ruth, I enjoy cooking very much, it just wasn't possible for me in this instance. I appreciate being included last night, I found the social contact very warm, and the food lovely, thanks to all :-)

I've RSVPd on the hope/expectation I can get there as this sounds fabulous. Will bring something veggie, of fish (but likely veggie), not sure what yet as have only just noticed this event's on so haven't had thinking time. If for some reason I can't make it, will change my RSVP as soon as able. Won't have a lot of time to prepare, so happy to chip in with the cost of anything if I that's a better option. Great idea for a foodie night.

Hello fellow Southerner! Wine is always acceptable. I think someone else was looking to share costs on bourbon for mint juleps, though. If you get really strapped for time, just bring some cash and pitch in there. :)

      March 22, 2013

    • jazzguitar_jase

Terrific. Im off mint just now for homeopathic purposes, so will come bearing wine :-) Look forward to meeting some new faces :-)

So sorry, going to have to miss out. Am on-call all weekend now so not sure if I'd be able to make it and don't want someone who can to miss out. Hope we have a similar meet-up again soon!

I have just found a recipe for Southern BBQ baked beans so was thinking hubby and I could bring this along with the key lime pie. I will probably make them without the bacon so they are veggie for those of you not eating meat. Hope that's ok! :)

Still to be decided but will definately be something veggie and most likely a something sweet too! Thanks to Kaitlin and Sumit for hosting :)

I'll try my hand at some dirty rice - a 'clean' veggie one and a 'dirty' one to keep all happy

Put me down for some sort of vegie side dish, okra or I just saw a recipe for baked pineapple gratin that I've had before! and tipple wise I do a pretty mean julep. But hey are Kaitlin and sumit of the south, if so their juleps will be better than mine :) (note my skills are more in the drinks than food area! though i'm developing )

    March 13, 2013

    • Nic B.

Oh, if anyone else doesn't have tipple in mind and just wants to pitch in on bourbon then contact me :)

I'll make a Southern Bread Pudding with a whisky or rum sauce.

    March 17, 2013

  • Amy A.

Can I bring Key Lime Pie? :)

    March 13, 2013

    • leonie

There's a great Kiwi tradition of making do (with a bit of number 8 wire) As long as there's no actual wire in the pie it'll be fine :)

      March 14, 2013

    • Amy A.

Haha I have heard of that! And rest assured, there will be no actual wire in the pie - just lots of Limey yumminess! ;)

Keen. I have a new place in Ngaio, could host...
