Olive Harvesting at Huangarua Olive Grove in the Wairarapa

Olive harvest is looming and we've been invited to help the lovely Reid Family from Huangarua Olives help Harvest their olive grove in the Wairarapa.

A group of Foodies helped harvest this grove a couple of years ago and had an amazing time raking the olives from the trees before sitting down for a lovely lunch with the Reid Family.

Jamie Reid; the owner of the grove also owns his own landscape gardening company in Wellington and is a mind of information about all things horticulture.

The grove is 100% organic and produces some of the most stunning olive oil i've ever tasted.

Please only sign up for this event if you are serious about attending.... rain or shine. It's majorly important that all of the olives are harvested over this weekend. We need to make sure that we give the Reid family accurate numbers of people attending.

Please make sure you bring waterproof clothing and shoes in case of inclement weather.

I'll email details of exactly how to get to the grove to individual attendees.

Please arrange your own transport and pop a note in the comments box if you're able to offer a lift.

Change in the lunch plan.....

A bit of a change of plan but I really feel for them.....last year they left it one day two late to pick and lost the entire crop to frost. It was devastating for them, so they can't take any risks this year. The family have gone to the grove today[masked] to pick and won't have time to get to the shops before Saturday so..... Please bring bread, salad or something to sling on the BBQ with you. Please let us know what you plan to bring by putting a note in comments box so we don't end up with double ups.... As payment for our picking the Reid's are going to hold a tasting for all that participated in Wellington when the olives have been pressed. Probably early July. Each person will be given a bottle or maybe two of olive oil, depending on the harvest. Their oil is top grade and is well regarded by numerous NZ chefs.

It's all done and dusted. The oil's been pressed but hasn't been delivered to Wellington yet. They got about 400 ltrs so not a bad year really. They are going to drop me a line about tasting as soon as the oils in town.

Fantastic that all the hard work has been done. They must be so relieved to have it safely in for this year! Will be fun doing the tasting too ... Thanks for the update Lucy, and for organising the event for us. Fun all around!

Jamie and Diane Reid that own the olive grove are fabulous. We had perfect weather, a great group of people, a wonderful picnic lunch and plenty of olives to harvest. Fantastic experience and can't wait for the olive oil!

Hi Monique, I think most people are leaving from the suburbs. I'm picking up from the city but already have Debbie, Phil and Alison. Is anyone else able to offer Monique a lift?

I still have room, leaving from Lower Hutt.

Anything that's easy to reheat and eat without the use of knives, forks etc sounds a good plan - gnaw on those chicken legs, or slap the breasts between some bread with pesto and a bit of salad and Bob's your uncle!

Good to know that Lucy - with all that driving around it sounded like we might have been in the middle of nowhere!

      May 31, 2013

    • Lucy M.

It is the middle of nowhere and off grid but well equipped thankfully....

Would love to come but can't make it this year!

I'm happy to bring a salad. If there in anywhere to plug in a slow cooker or warm up I can make a soup to warm us up.

    May 29, 2013

    • Lindsay C.

I got the impression in here we are going for that no dishes no mess idea so was thinking veggie sticks instead of a salad. Happy to bring whichever suits best, I'll be doing my shopping shortly so let me know which you prefer - veggie sticks or soup.

    • Lucy M.

Hi Lindsay, either or. There is fully equipped kitchen in the house so make it as simple or as complicated as you like. Whatever is easiest for you.

    Hi Lucy,
When and where should I meet up with you on Saturday morning? Cheers,
    Alison

    May 28, 2013

    • Lucy M.

Hi Alison, i'm picking Debbie and Phil up at 8am outside Harvey Norman on Tory Street if you want to meet there.

      May 30, 2013

    • Alison

Thanks Lucy, that would be great. See you there. Alison

      May 30, 2013

  • Lucy M.

I'm going to bring carrot, pine nut and poppyseed salad and a few baguettes (providing Moore Wilson them in when I stop by in the morning)

    May 30, 2013

  • Lucy M.

Hi Everyone, please make sure you bring waterproof gear on Saturday. There is a good chance that the grass will be dewey to start with. Gum boots are a good idea for those that have them. If you want to join the convoy for the last leg of the journey we'll be meeting at the Catholic church turing (on your directions) in Martinborough at 9.30am sharp and proceeding from there. We'll only hang around for 5 mins so if you want to join the convoy please be on time. Thank you

I'll bring some precooked chicken drums !

    May 29, 2013

  • Manuela F.

I will bring bread rolls and some home made pesto. Possibly something sweet too. If people want to bring meat, I'd suggest something pre-cooked (like roast chicken or chicken drumsticks/nibbles) as that would be easier and quicker to reheat than cooking from scratch. Something hot does sound just the ticket though - soup would be yum if we can run to that!

I will be driving from Lower Hutt with three spare seats : ) text or call to carpool[masked]

Hi Stephanie, I've been on the waitlist for this and someone has dropped out so I'm now keen to go. Do you still have space in your car to take someone? I'm in Ngaio and can easily pop round to your place at whatever time suits you. Thanks!

Hi Lucy, how long is the event? I've got something on in the evening and will need to have a decent rest inbetween!

    May 11, 2013

    • Lucy M.

Hi Caroline, it's going to be a pretty long day. The grove is about the 20 min drive out of Martinborough and we'll be picking for a good few hours before we have lunch. We're going on the first day of the pick so the more we can get done the better. It's well worth a trip out there but will be hard work.

      May 12, 2013

    • Caroline Emily D.

Thanks Lucy, I am being a theatre usher in the evening and don't want to fall asleep on the job so i think i will give this a miss, fun as it sounds.

What time would we start harvesting? Just wondering how early we'd need to leave Wellington. I'm fine with an early start but if bringing hubbie he's less of a morning person. Is anyone thinking they might overnight somewhere in the Wairarapa rather than travelling over the Rimutakas twice in one day? It's Queen's birthday weekend after all!

    May 12, 2013

I would love to give this a try. Would love a lift if someone is going from J'ville as first event...but am happy to take my car too.
