Viewing from Mt Kaukau would require a 25min walk up, and then down again in the dark on a path that is at times steep/rough/slippery & all that at once, also very exposed, so not recommended.
The Moon will be due north at 1am and set in the NW. Makara may be OK but I am not sure if the hills to the north may get in the way at the start(depends how keen u r). You might want to check out Terrace Rd or somethings similar in Titahi Bay. See
