NOTE VENUE CHANGE TO:
Rogue and Vagabond, Glover Park, Garrett Street.
Keen to catch up with those who have expressed interest in summer busking. Rogue & Vagabond....outside on the grass and bean chairs, with sunshine, hopefully!
This isn't a performance/gig. Just show up if you want to catch up with other group members to discuss mutual busking options and ideas.
Join or login to comment.
Great to catch up with Stephanie, Greg, Teresa, Noel, Lis, Paul and Andrew last night. Cheers for coming along guys. Teresa and I hung around for the jazz/swing band that kicked off about 9:30, well worth the wait, and the pizza was pretty good too!

Wonderful to meet everyone and catch up with some familiar faces. Thank you for organising Tim and looking forward to fun musical collaborations ahead:)

Can't make it this evening. Keen to busk with you guys tho.

for those I haven't met before, my 'outfit' today consists of a blue/green/white checked shirt - it looks a bit like one of those old woolen blankets your granny used to have, but way cooler...haha. Ask around, you'll find us!
Hi all, just to clarify and sorry for the confusion, this is a get-together for those keen on busking together. We haven't booked space at Dukes to actually perform. This is an opportunity to set some dates, pick some songs, general get-to-know others keen to do the same :)

Hi, wishing you guys the best for tonight. Dead keen to make it, apologies I had to withdraw, was pulled into work, I'll make it another time, cheers!
I'll be there. Just to confirm, so we're not bring instruments to this one, it's a chance to meet and discuss songs and who plays what etc, rather than actually playing.

I'd love to come along and perform a few songs this Thursday 16 Jan 2014, at Duke Carvels Bar . Can you let me know if I can have a spot? am at [masked] or facebook me. Thanks!

Hi Madeleine. This isn't an actual performance event, just a social gathering for those keen on busking to hook up and chat about ideas, songs etc....
1 · January 14, 2014
Hi guys, I'm extremely keen to meet up! Not sure what instruments there are so far and if my classy clarinet (jazzy too if I try really hard) fits in... :)
1 · January 10, 2014
i have no idea what instruments either...we shall see who turns up, it's all part of the fun randomness going on here :)

Hey buskers! Just rolling this stone onwards... i'm keen to have a get-together for just those of us who have said they're keen on some busking. We'd better do this while we have some summer left...yes, I know...what summer....haha. I'll set a date for a get- together, we can discuss song choices, instruments, possible dates and times for busking etc etc... and have a few social drinkies too :) Hopefully you can all attend, but as many as poss. Oh yeah....check out the songs uploaded on this site....there's quite a good bunch and variety....up in the FILES section, under MORE.

ok, lets use Meetups built-in system for now then. Thanks for the responses and ideas! We can go to Dropbox or an alternative if need be in the future. I can see what you mean Jan, and I have renamed the two existing files with the prefix 'oldfiles'. Lets just upload our songs and see how it goes, we can change file names at any stage. Feel free to upload some song files (i think .txt, .pdf and .jpg are all accepted) to test it out!

I actually agree Tim. It is still possible to group files by changing names a little and using alphabetic order for grouping. It may be best to have a separate file for every song using name of song. Later we can add a character to the front of the name and order in groups if needed. Maybe pdf files including youtube links if that helps. We can always change and still go to Dropbox or website. Half the job is producing the files. Thanks for the comments!
the simplest, but not the most flexible system, is Meetups own file system. Hover over 'More' in the navigation bar, then choose 'Files'. You'll see a list of songs that we've uploaded a while ago. File access can be restricted to 'all', 'members only', or 'leadership team only'. No way to group files but the big benefit is you don't have to have use any other software, web site, password. As long as you've logged onto Meetup you can access this area. What do people think of this?
Seems like a lot of work Jan. Up to the group but the dropbox option works really well for my band and we have been using it for quite a while. Anyone can set it up and invite others to join who can also add stuff...so simple...and an icon comes up on my screen when a band member has updated or added an item. Anyway whatever works.
I had a play on my own website yesterday. We could do something like this: http://janartsguitars.com/index.php/wellington-meetup.htmlIt is not more than another suggestion/option to consider.
Anybody can upload and download. I can turn it in a useful page or multiple pages for all of us. May have to include a logon system I think because the whole world uploading anything may be a bit much. I can refine it and feel free to have a play. I can change settings so files can be deleted as well but it requires a bit more security around it. I am interested in reactions constructive, negative, positive whatever.
Works for me! :)

Hi Jan. Yes, this seems to work well. I suppose that there's not going to be any more than say 20 or 30 songs in there at any one time. Can you do a bit more tweaking so we can delete files and perhaps drag files into folders for easier sorting. The Meetup File system is good because its there for all members to use at any time, but it doesn't have any sorting/grouping function from what i can see
Tab files are small, and sharing by email would be easy. Alternately, a link to a preferred tab can be sent to the group, or people can bring printed sheets to the session for others. To my mind, this seems a simpler approach...but I'm open to the group's preference.
Sounds like a good option. I haven't used Dropbox but I assume you share a password etc. This meetup site you are on now has the option of sharing files as well. I used it ones and I couldn't delete or update the file after uploading. When I checked recently I noted that the file was gone. Was not very user-friendly. Sharing files on shared memory may still require some management to avoid that it turns into a dumping ground without structure.I have a website myself and plenty of space but then it may become too dependant on me but it may have access to good archive tools etc. I will think about it a little more. I am happy to assist getting some system in place.

...anyway just a thought...
Dropbox is really simple to set up and free and as you invite more people to use it (cobuskers) you get more free space! Great way to share documents and pictures etc...
Tim it may be a good idea to start a dropbox link. Then everyone can put their choice of songs (and tabs/chords etc) and we can start a bit of a set list?
ok, mixture of prefs as expected! skilled musos will be happy to turn up and busk away on the day. I'd like to sort out a few preferred tunes, get the words sussed, iron out the rough spots. So I'll post a busking practice session and alternate this with the regular jam session. Probably in my office space, just off Cuba Street - handy to bars for some liquid refreshment before/after/during! :) feel free to add your thoughts!

I'd find it very useful to have a list of at least a few songs we'd like to do. I'd feel awkward standing around in front of people and not knowing the lyrics! However, do we want this to be more performance or public jam? I lean to the former, myself.

A list of tunes may be useful to help focus our own practice a little. We could even order the list. At the top the ones most of us want to play and the less popular ones at the bottom and put the lot in a file to distribute. Sorry if I cause headaches already. Maybe just start in a quiet backstreet and take it from there. Supposed to be fun in the first place.
hey thanks to everyone who's shown an interest in some busking! How should be do this then? Get together once or twice and build up a set - organised but a bit unadventurous. Or just pick some random dates when at least a couple of us will be at a certain place in town and whoever shows up joins in - fun and exciting but a bit hit and miss if you don't know the tunes. Or any other suggestions......

Second one sounds like lots of fun...just pick a place and have a get together...hopefully a nice sunny day with not too much wind!

Good plan. Working towards something would be good. I have to admit I am not very brave.
0 · November 4, 2013
I'm interested if you need some double bass
0 · November 3, 2013
Yep I'm keen, got a mobile pa for two singers and one instrument. Wouldn't mind trying it out.
Yeah that sounds fun!
I'd be keen!
Need to renew my licience...free from City Council!
As a part timer definitely interested. Thinking of getting a cajon soon so can contribute some rythym
Next: Invite friends
Sick of playing music alone? New to town and keen to hook up with other musos? Want to get better but struggle for ideas and inspiration?
We encourage any musician to collaborate and jam alongside a variety of other musos with the hope that this creates a healthy and supportive music community.
Our group is mostly amateur musicians, keen to hone our skills and progress toward public performance. But the group is open to any music level.....with a main requirement of.... passion for music!
Feel free to make suggestions for meetups! We share music TAB and notation using the built-in file system, so once you've joined the group you can access this.
Hope to see you soon!
