Weekend Challenge 1 - One Bright Colour

  • June 14, 2013 · 5:00 PM

Hi folks. We’re starting up a new sort of meetup for the group. Actually, it’s sort of an un-meetup, as you don’t need to specifically go anywhere or catch up with anyone.

The idea is that Jess, Amelia and I will be issuing a challenge each weekend, and you are welcome and encouraged to submit a single image that you think fits with the (loosely) interpreted theme of the weekend.

We’re not entirely sure if the best way is to upload the images to Meetup.com, or to flickr, and we’d be interested in your thoughts on this. For this first one though, let’s just stick with Meetup.

Images can be taken from 5PM Friday until 8AM Monday, and need to have been uploaded by midnight on the Monday to be included. The three of us will vote on the submitted images, and let you know what bragging rights you have as soon as possible.

You don’t need to enter every week, so no pressure. For those of you who complain that you just don’t get out to take some photos though, perhaps this will provide the encouragement.

If you don’t want to take part this week, we’d still like to know what you think in the comments. Go for it!

Weekend Challenge 1 - One Bright Colour

I will add an example image, but please interpret the theme as you wish.

    Okay, the moment of truth!

Jess, Amelia and I have rated the eligible images, compiled a summary of those ratings, and come up with three winners!

As stated, the prize consists of bragging rights. If anyone would like to donate some other prizes, just let me know, and we'll do something about it for the next one. Without further ado, the winners are:

Third place goes to Peti Morgan, for 'It's raining today...'

Second and first were very close, but second place goes to Shyam Panchacharan for 'Our new edition'.

Congratulations for first place in the inaugural competition to Sarah F for 'Mandarin'.

Thanks to all the contestants. What a great start. Amelia has already launched the next one:

Weekly Challenge 2 - Frozen Water. Get your thinking caps on and see what you might be able to do. More info, and some lessons we learnt, over here:

Thanks for all the entries for our first Weekend Challenge. We have 20 photos in the gallery, and this challenge is now closed. More on the results soon...

I'm aware of the photos in two galleries. Leave it with me. They are both being rated.

I thought the rules were plainly stated. A single image. I'll deal with it. No problem.

What a great idea. I'd like to just upload to Meetups as I don't have a flickr account ( I could of course, open one :-) )

I only just got back from weekend away to where i had left my camera - too late but what a fab idea! Looking forward to seeing the shots.

Some good entries in here! You have until 8AM this morning to snap an image, and until midnight tonight to upload it. Get moving!

Am I being stupid or do you have to wait until the challenge date/time has finished before you can post a photo up?

    June 16, 2013

    • Brendon Doran

Hey Richard. You can add photos here: http://www.meetup.com... (the link is in the meetup description, the last word in fact, but it doesn't show as a link until you put the mouse over the word "here").

Thanks - got there in the end.

Hi guys. Don't worry about the RSVP. Just go ahead and take a photo, and then upload it to the gallery via the link in my intro above. It turns out you can't RSVP to an event after it starts, so I'll work something different out for the next one.

Now if this gets too complex you will me in the technology trap and won't be able to post anything

    June 14, 2013

  • Shyam Panchacharan

excellent idea but on Flickr you can see details of the image that has been uploaded whereas on meetup that metadata information is not available and you will never reallt know date n time photos were taken. Best to post on Flickr plus image quality won't be bad!! Btw, I am keen as ;-)

    June 14, 2013

    • Mike Nicholson

If you use the "Save for web" in Photoshop and PS Elements, all metadata will be stripped from the image.

    Count me in, sounds great!

We could also share photos either in a flickr group (now it's all cool again) or use a closed group on Facebook.
like the 'FMS photo a day challenge' does. I like the Facebook photo a day challenge group as you can post your photos to facebook without having to be 'FB friends' with the other members of the group. So everyone only gets to see the photos posted to the group and to comment on them, but not the rest of your FB stuff (unless you want them too). And it doesn't go on your FB wall, only the group wall. Check ou the 'FMS photo a day challenge' group on Facebook here:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/...

If nothing else you could steal some of the guidelines they have around posting photos to the group.

Great idea indeed. Maybe open it a bit more to the community by letting the winner choose the next topic, and / or letting everyone who participates vote on one other image? A threaded forum might be the best place for this but I guess you want to keep it connected to the Meet Up group rather than just open it out.

great idea and considering the flexibility it will develop into a good routine :) Regarding the bragging rights, I am sure Jim has lot of "perks" in his kitty which will be worth the efforts ( hinting at the weekend workshop :) ) :)

That's brilliant idea.. gives us an opportunity to improve..:) I'm in too; but, I may miss out once in a while...
