Weekend Challenge 3 - 1/2

  • June 28, 2013 · 5:00 PM

We're really on a roll with our new sort of meetup for the group. Actually, it’s sort of an un-meetup, as you don’t need to specifically go anywhere or catch up with anyone.

The idea is that Amelia, Jim and Jess will be issuing a challenge each weekend, and you are welcome and encouraged to submit a single image that you think fits with the (loosely) interpreted theme of the weekend.

We’re still debtating if the best way is to upload the images to Meetup.com, or to flickr, or even to facebook, and we’d be interested in your thoughts on this. For the moment, let’s just stick with Meetup.

Images can be taken from 5PM Friday until 8AM Monday, and need to have been uploaded by midnight on the Monday to be included. The three of us will vote on the submitted images, and let you know what bragging rights you have as soon as possible.

You don’t need to enter every week, so no pressure. For those of you who complain that you just don’t get out to take some photos though, perhaps this will provide the encouragement.

If you don’t want to take part this week, we’d still like to know what you think in the comments. Go for it! Jess has come up with a great theme for this one.

Weekend Challenge 3 - 1/2

Here are links to a few example images from Jess to get you thinking:

A few clarifications from here on...

  • One image only.
  • Images must (for now at least) be taken during the weekend timeframe as discussed.
  • You can't RSVP after the event has started. Don't worry about it, just get going.
  • Interpret the theme any way you want.
  • For now, images must be uploaded to the meetup.com gallery - and we found out that the event itself creates a gallery when the event closes, so just wait until then to do your uploads.
  • It's best to give your image a caption.
  • have fun.
  • Jess, Amelia and I are ineligible to win, but we might enter, to keep the pace up. :-) We're all pretty busy though...

Just my two bob's worth, but I think it may be useful if the winners could say a few words about the techniques used or why it was taken that way or what they were trying to say with it. Just a couple of sentences is all.

Okay, we've collated all the results, and we have a much closer competition this time. Great big stack of entries which was great. It was a tough theme, I think. One thing that became clear was that there is sometimes a conflict. If you want to win, you need to fit the theme somehow AND provide some excellence with regard to focus, composition, exposure etc., and that's not always easy.

Bragging rights can't go to everyone though, so here are the winners:

We have a tie for third place! Equal bragging to Richard Abbott for My Better Half, and Shyam Panchacharan for The Embassy Lounge.

With an image called Wickedly Devious?, Megan Barr takes second place.

And the winner, with a great untitled image, George Sutton. http://goo.gl/KbMe5

Congratulations, and many thanks for all the entries.

I've just posted the details for the next Weekend Challenge, No 4, and the theme is 'words'. Go take a look.

You guys figure it out and post a meetup suggestion then. :-)

Cool, happy to help set it up if there's enough interest.

Concur with Jim. It was fun to do and made you think about the different possibilities. We all can add our own comments if we feel like it as well, if we make it serious competition than some of us would not make an attempt, which I think is not the intention. Cheers

Awesome photos from those who participated and congrats to the winners! It was fun and challenging trying to decide what image to use :-)

Agreed, I had one of a book halfway (literally) read and photographed that as well. Now, for words - hopefully I don't end up saying too much :-)

My alternative picture was of a red and green apple, each cut in half and switched up to be 2 half red and half green apples. Words... Hmmm, gotta start planning this one :-)

Thanks guys on your comments on my photo for the challenge. Couple of words o the setup. Very simple - just a silver card behind, knife stuck into a piece of board and the apple blutacked in place. Light from a glass door to the right. This actually was the first one I took of about 20! Cheers all

Nicely done, strong composition. Well deserved win!

Hi George - thank you for the detailed information. These do come in handy for others when they look at how it is done. We all can learn from each other when details of how photo is taken is listed as well.

Congrats to Megan, Richard and George. Well done.

Just to be sure, are we posting our image here when it's available or to the album that's been created?

What we're saying is that they are the same thing. So either to the album now, or via the link here when it appears. Just don't *create* an album. :-)

Would a triptych count as one photo? Just asking as I can't decide between three images I have. If I have to choose one then I will.

Okay, something at least a little important for those in a hurry to add their images. Thanks to Phil and Debbie for pointing me in the right direction.

Even though the image link for the meetup doesn't show up on this page until the meetup is over (tomorrow), the gallery already exists, and you can access it by:

    * Going back to the main WPMG page.
    * Clicking on [Photos]
    * Then [Upload Photos]
    * Then selecting the already existing album with the same title as the meetup, so in this case [Weekend Challenge 3 - 1/2 (June 28, 2013)]. Don't create a new album.
    * Go ahead and follow your nose to add your image (just 1, remember)

If this is all too hard, just wait until tomorrow morning, and the link will appear in the meetup itself. Cheers
    Jim

Guys, did someone create an album to put some pics in? If so, please don't do that. A gallery is automatically created when the meetup closes (as noted in the details) and that's where we want the images, otherwise we might not see them to vote on them.

Remember that awesome photos can be taken inside too! If the weather is crummy, take a look around you inside your home for something to fulfil the brief!

Hi Jeffrey. As noted in the details, we're working on the best way to achieve this. In the meantime, we're sticking with Meetup. Never mind the logistics, give us you image!

I've given a relatively geometric interpretation here, but I hope that we will see some creative and artistic interpretations of my theme.
I look forward to seeing what happens!
