Weekend Challenge 4 - Words

Things are rocking with our weekend challenges, and they're easy because you don’t need to specifically go anywhere or catch up with anyone.

The idea is that Amelia, Jim and Jess will be issuing a challenge each weekend, and you are welcome and encouraged to submit a single image that you think fits with the (loosely) interpreted theme of the weekend.

We’re still debating if the best way is to upload the images to Meetup.com, or to flickr, or even to facebook, and we’d be interested in your thoughts on this. For the moment, let’s just stick with Meetup.

Here are links to a few example images from Jim to get you thinking:

Blue text, Weight Management, flickrtype, dot matrix.

Rules and hints…

  • 5PM Friday to 8AM Monday to take the image. Images taken outside this timeframe are not eligible.
  • One image only.
  • You can't RSVP after the event has started. Don't worry about it, just get going. You can still enter.
  • Interpret the theme any way you want.
  • It's best to give your image a caption. Honest, it might help your chances…
  • Have fun. No, really. Otherwise, what's the point?
  • Jess, Amelia and I are ineligible to win, but we might enter, to keep the pace up. :-) We're all pretty busy though…
  • We have sorted out the best way to manage the album, and you can upload images to it once the meetup starts. A link will be supplied in my first comment. Once the meetup finishes (8AM Monday) a link will also appear in the meetup itself, and you can use that to achieve the same thing.
  • There are no prizes (unless you want to sponsor one) but you'll have all the bragging rights you can handle.
  • The judges' decision is final. We'll provide a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetter.
  • No need to enter every week. But it's good fun!

When you've got yourself an image that's ready, put it here.

Second place was taken out by 'Memories of travel' by Brendon Doran. We again thought the image had a great story to tell, and that the combinations of fonts and the selective blurring added something special to that.

I've added a comment around the process used to create my photo as well if anyone is interested (thanks Bhushan for asking).

And finally, a clear first place and the associated congratulations goes to David Alderman's 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…'. We loved the clear thought and planning that went into it, and the way the lighting nicely overcame the necessarily crowded nature of the image. Lovely text, wonderful colour and textures. And again, as with so many of the images this week, there was a story to tell.

    Again, congratulations to David!

Thank you for the feedback everybody who comments, and for making me the winner! It's the first time I have exhibited any of my work publicly outside Flickr and I wasn't expecting anything more than critique. I really love these challenges to give us a theme and ideas for making photographs, I am looking forward to coming up with something new this weekend!

Third place this week goes to Fiona Flowers for 'TEARS That day many years ago changed my life.. those words will never be forgotten.' A very poignant design, and clearly a story to tell.

What a stunning response this week! And such huge variety! The results were interesting, in that there was more variation in the judges' thoughts than there has been in the previous challenges.

Nonetheless, we have a clear set of winners!

I think the most interesting thing is the ways in which people have chosen to interpret the theme. Things I would never have thought of, and that as you'll see from the results, storytelling was foremost in a lot of minds. I guess words will do that!

Just so it's easier to comment back again, I'll separate out the results in comments below.

I've just posted the details for the next Weekend Challenge, No 5, and the theme is 'In Miniature'. Go take a look.

Loving this sort of Meetup and am enjoying getting out and about, shooting to topic. Seeing the different interpretations for the topic are great to see and inspiring.

I think the photos for "words" are amazing. I have tried to comment on them all but if I have missed yours then humble apologies. I think this weekly challenge he is brilliant

I've eagerly awaited each persons upload. The results are fabulous. Such a variety of interpretations. The photos are charming, thought provoking, sentimental, amusing and a myriad of other aspects. Well done to each and every one of us. Bring on next weekend :-) Thanks to the organisers for coming up with this great idea, it works well judging by the first four challenges.

Just a general heads-up. You can only enter one image for the challenge. If you have more than one image in here at midnight, all your images will be disqualified... Sorry.

Half an hour left to RSVP... but if you haven't, don't worry. You can still take a photo from 5PM tonight until 8AM on Monday, and you can still enter it. Go. Go.
