I've been in touch with James Gilberd, a photographer, who runs the Photospace gallery and studio just off Courtenay Place and has been working full time in photography for the last couple of decades, as regards to giving a bit of a talk about photography and Photospace one evening in September.
James is going to show us around his studio and the gallery and do a bit of a talk. There will be a show of photographs by Heinz Sobiecki who hand prints photographs in the darkroom, more information on Heinz, and his portfolio, can be found at http://www.heinzsobie....
I think this will be a great evening and so highly encourage everyone to sign up!
Awesome Idea. Would prefer Wed or Thurs.
Friday the pub usually calls to me :)
Sounds great! The WPS meetings are on every second Thursday (e.g., 9th September -> http://wps.org.nz/programme.html
) and I would hate to miss one of those. Fridays would work best for me.
Yeah me too I'd prefer Wednesday or Friday. Otherwise, great idea!
Hi Thomas, it has. 7pm on the 8th September.
I am coming in from the Hutt Valley so if anyone wants a ride home to the Hutt let me know.
I dropped in to see James at lunchtime and it looks like we'll have an interesting evening.
I found it a little difficult to find but basically if you're going up Courtenay Place towards the Empire cinema, look for the BNZ bank which is on left hand side of the road and on the corner (and opposite the Establishment bar), there is a pedestrian crossing. Cross over to the right hand side and it's more or less directly opposite the crossing. Give me a call on 021 500097 if you get lost!
The door way is just next to the Sahara Kebab place
That was the second times I had heard James talk about the gallery but being there was so much better than the first. Interesting comments about what it takes to put an exhibition together. The visit to the studio was also great as well. Thanks to Alastair for organising this.
A very illuminating (groan!) talk - I think it's difficult to decide quite where to start explanations in such a diverse field! I must pluck up the courage one day to ask quite why the pictures were chosen: I'm sure several people wondered quite why some of the pictures were on the walls!
Thanks for organising this Alastair, it was a very interesting evening. I would be interested in doing the studio workshop if there are other people also interested.
Thanks Alastair, for organising it. It was worthwhile attending. I might be interested in a joint studio workshop as well, depending on the price.
Anyone interested in trying portraits in a studio setting: The "The Portrait" course offered by Newlands College provides an opportunity to have a go at using studio lighting equipment: -> http://www.cecwellington.ac.nz/courses/174-photography-th...![]()

I am booked on that course, which looks quite good.
I've done the course and enjoyed it. I'm happy to answer questions.
The one time I'm held up by work had to be last night ... Looks like I really missed something. Great that you all could enjoy it!

Sounds like a great idea.
