Get to know each other a little better...

A reminder that unfortunately we have a maximum limit for the venue. If you don't intend coming, could you please change your RSVP so we can let a few more in?

-----------

Wow, the response has been stunning, and then Sean has been kind enough to do all the checking with the venue for me. Just as well, as I'm now going to be out of town, and therefore unable to attend. :-(

it's clear then that I'm going to need to arrange another one! Expect to hear about that early in the new year!

I'm really sorry not to be attending. Please have fun, and try to find some more photo-buddies. And be nice to Sean!

-----------

'I'd like to gauge the level of interest here before setting a date or location, so feel free to indicate your interest and change your plans afterwards. No demerits for changes!

What I would like to do is to see how many of us can catch up at a cafe in the evening. Clearly the location would depend on numbers, but the idea would be somewhere that can cope with anything from a coffee to a meal..., and can handle restricted budgets...

What I would like you to do is to bring three things with you:

1. Bring the device you most commonly use to create photos. Camera, SLR, phone, tablet, Brownie...

2. Bring something that can display some of your work. Prints, phone, tablet, laptop, camera etc.

3. Bring your sense of humour. It's tough meeting a whole bunch of new people, for some people, so let's keep this relaxed.

If the weather behaves, we can go for a walk afterwards. If not, we can just hang out, right?

In theory there are over 450 members in the group, so if we got anything remotely like that number we might need to rethink, but let's see how it goes.

So, if you are interested, please RSVP, AND respond with a note in here. Just tell us two things.

* If you had to group most of your photography in one category, what would it be? (architecture, family, portrait, sport, news etc.)

* What style of photography don't you do that you wish you could?

I think that's it for now. Talk to me! :-)

Cheers

What, all these attendees, and no one took any photos?

    December 1, 2012

    • Paul M.

thats a lol Jim.. i never even thought to share with you, sorry. I'd say have another one asap, those who couldnt make it want one, and perhaps we could have a central speaker, but honestly it seemed to work ok. I only met 4 or 5 people and I would like to have met more but it was a bit awkward, so many were absorbed with each others work. maybe thats how it should be anyway. how about we run one that matches the people who are especially skilled at something to the others have said they want to learn.

Nicola, you wouldn't have been far behind some of us if you had come - traffic was insane, took several of us 35 minutes to drive from the railway station to Oriental Bay!

Thank you to the organisers for arranging this Meetup. Twas a grand event.

Got to talk police photography and shooting kids, saw a Wifi kit in action, ran into a few bodies that I've met in other Meetup groups, and viewed some wonderful example of peoples art.

I was thinking that as an adjunct to the group (and as I wasn't able to bring along examples of my work), that we could all 'hook up' with each other via the net. To start the ball rolling, here are some of my contact points.

Link circles with me in google+...

Thank you to all who attended, I hope you had fun meeting and chatting with other members. Looking at the response, I think I can safely say there will be a further gathering of a similar nature. Jim and I have already been discussing how to schedule a regular social event in the future.

Sadly (for me; others may find this refreshing) it seems I have lost my voice and may need to deputise a couple of friends to any significant speaking roles... :)

Looking forward to this! I love landscapes but mine never come out very well. I seem to get good portraits every now and then though...

Really looking forward to this! I love taking decorative photos of nature and animals and having these photographs printed onto products - tiles, fridge magnets, t-shirts etc. I would like to get into portraiture.

Although I'm not professional photographer I enjoy to take photos of nature (landscape and animals) and people in spontaneous situations. I would like to try with portrait and news.

My main focus is nature, particularly bird photography. Throw in some landscape, travel and some street as well .

So, I've waitlisted myself now that there is a date - since my attendance was exceedingly date-dependent.
Most of my photography is landscape. Some is reasonable, a lot is pretty rubbish :P
I'm trying to get in to time-lapse, but have lacked the patience recently.
If the space doesnt come up, have fun anyway, and I'll sort out hosting the next one of these with Sean :)

Actually, on that subject, after all of this I'm going to be in Auckland on the day, so cannot attend. That should mean that as soon as I change my RSVP, you should be on the attend list, as you're the only one currently in the waiting list... I think.

I've arranged with the Parade Cafe to have the use of their upstairs function room for ~2 hours on Tuesday 27th from 6pm. Sorry for those of you looking for other, better days; this one we were able to get a suitably-sized venue for the number of respondants without a hiring fee.

Oh, and most of my photography would be landscape or urban architecture, but recently has taken a turn for portraits.

Thanks Sean, Jim. great idea and very cool to put it together for us all. I had a particularly happy time at the eclipse meetup, such gratitude from everyone for the event! was slightly overwhelmed at that aspect. THANK YOU ALL!!!!

I left most of the technology packed, i didnt see the need and I enjoyed the face to face and sharing much more without having to run screens and webcasts etc.. However i do have a big deep-cycle battery and inverters and sound systems so it is easily possible for us to have tech stuff at a meetup, and i quite like that activity, sharing to online people in many countries.

If it had been cloudy then we would have still enjoyed the eclipse via internet and screens.

I find myself focusing on landscape, candid people shots and adventure things I am into. In the past I have done semi-professional video & photography for weddings and various types of events.

Wanting to explore time-laps and followup on some underwater stuff I have planned.

    1. I do a self portrait every day (Flickr 365) but most of my stuff could be categorised as 'the world around me'. I like to photograph views, buildings, street scenes - things that change.

    2. I've never really done street photography and I'm not sure I could get over the feeling that I would be invading people's space. I'd love to be able to do good portraits - of others as well as myself.
