Running up Mt Climie (aka Climbie)

Mt Climie is North East of Upper Hutt - with a total elevation gain of 850m from start to finish it is one of the best 'hill' runs of the area. The views from the top is pretty spectacular.

I've run/jogged/growled to the top once - the return trip is about 16kms - the first 8km is straight up as you can see from the elevation chart below. Round trip took about 2hrs for me.

This run is also on Page 62 of Runners Guide to Wellington.

This is best done on a clear day as it can get pretty windy up at the tops. So a call will be made on the day based on weather etc.

There is a single track that descends to the right v steep off a spur near the top down to Whitemans valley forest then you run back to Tunnel Gully and the tunnel back to car-its an AWESOME run with amazing views of the valley..Keen to lead a loop one time..its taken about three goes before we found the correct way through the forest

Hey guys, note that meeting point is end of "Parkes Line Road" - not far from the Maymorn Railway station - http://tracks.org.nz/track/show/275 - we will go via the Tane's track then onto the Climie climb.. :-)

Chan, I should catch the Upper Hutt train, correct? When I put it into journey planner it didn't come up with any trains but the Upper Hutt line shows trains going.

If anyone is coming from town that I could carpool with that would be good.

This was one of my regular runs for a while and I found the hill quite relentless. The track is sheltered by bush until you hit the very top though, so if it is very windy you can always turn back at the first tower (Nth end of the ridge). Two hours is about right, I'm a slow plodder with a hip replacement and looking back at my log I see my times vary between 2.30 to 1.45 depending on how long I lay in the sun at the top. On a good day its well worth the sweat.
