Kiritaki Hut (Ruahines)

Kiritaki Hut is about 6 hours' fast tramp up an initially steep spur.  It undulates after that through infamous leatherwood, then goes up again to get to the hut, halfway between the river and the ridgetop.  The hut is a nice cozy 6-bunk hut with a fireplace.  We'll take a tent or two so we can sleep out if we find other people there.

This is a Wellington Tramping & Mountaineering Club trip.
Trip Grade: EM (4-7 hours/day on tracks and routes)
Cost: $35 ($30 for WTMC members)

What’s the plan?

We're going to do this from one side of the Ruahines to the other!  So we'll take two cars from Platform 9 of Wellington Railway Station, at 5:00pm on the Friday, and head north towards Woodville - around 2 hours' drive.  Then we'll take one car to the Hawkes Bay side of the Ruahines, and the other will go to the Ashurst side.

We'll camp the night at the road ends, in tents and flies.

Saturday morning we'll set off walking - on the Hawkes Bay side we'll go up the Oruakeretaki stream, and on the Ashurst side we'll go up the track and over Matanginui Peak (1095m).  We'll meet at the hut, and swap keys.

After a shared dinner, lots of tall tales and a restful night’s sleep, we’ll head out the other way and pick up the other car.

We should be back fairly early, probably around 5pm back in Wellington!

The Finances

The cost of this trip, to cover the petrol and the shared gear we'll pick up from WTMC, is $30 for WTMC members and $35 for non-members.

Once you've RSVP'ed, please deposit this money into my bank account straight away.  It's first in, first paid so when the trip fills up it'll be waitlisted in the order that people pay.

Pay via internet banking into this account:

Use your name and 'Kiritaki' as a reference, eg 'Maarten Kiritaki'.  And message me when you've put the money there.

The money is due by 9 October.  After 9 October we don't generally refund your money since we've had to sort the cars and gear, but if we can arrange someone off the waitlist to come instead, then we'll give you your money back.

What should I bring?

There's a good gear list on the tramping club website, that I for one always use to check off what I have:

By all means give me a yell if you're not sure what you should or shouldn't take.

We’ll have a shared dinner, I’ll give you a shopping list sometime between now and when we leave.

Bring Breakfasts x2, Lunches x2 and snacks.

We’ll need a couple of stoves and billies to cook with, and a couple of tents or flies.  I’ll bring a first aid kit and an emergency beacon that I'll get from the WTMC.  I'll distribute this shared gear out so you'll probably need to carry some of it.

More info?

Any questions?

Give me a yell of course!

I’m looking forward to this trip, it’s a good excuse to get into the hills ay.

Excellent weekend in the Ruahines. A bit of an eye opener& a real challenge but a great sense of achievement at the end. All the team were good value & the leaders knew their stuff especially when it comes to a good camp curry.

Maarten, If this is a WTMC hike, does that mean you haven't put up the sheet in the club? I was looking to sign up for this one, but have now noticed you have all spots full as you put in on here? Is that usual for WTMC hikes? (I've been a member for the last 6 months)

Hi Paul, you can sign up for this trip both on the signup sheet at WTMC meetings on Wednesday nights, and here at meetup! I'm going to take about half and half from each way of signing up - there'll be about 8 of us in total. The sheet was up at the club, and it down when I had reached my trip quota.
