Easter Tramping Trip - Tongariro/Ruapehu

As Easter is fast-approaching, its one of the last opportunities of the autumn to do some tramping in reasonably warm weather, somewhere a little further afield than Wellington.

The plan is to go to the Tongariro/Ruapehu area, with people splitting off into sub-groups to suit their needs.

Based on the planning meeting, there are three sub-groups:

1)  Four of us are doing the 4-day Northern Circuit round Tongariro.  Apparently tent spaces are now fully booked.

2)  Two drivers (Glenn and Jenny) are going up either Thursday night or Friday morning.  Glenn can take 2 more people (but may be coming back Saturday night or Sunday) and Jenny can take 3-4 more and is flexible on when (Sunday or Monday).

The plan for this group is to do the Tongariro Crossing (car-shuttle) on either the Friday or Saturday and then potentially day trips or an easy overnighter in a hut.  The DoC website link is below and there is a booklet of Walks around Tongariro that you can print out and use (its currently out of print).

http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/central-north-island/

Here are some options recommended by DoC/and one I've done before:

1) Day trip: Tama Lakes from Whakapapa Village.

2) Day trip (6hours) OR easy overnighter (3 hrs in, 3 hrs out) loop track.  Whakapapa Village to Whakapapaiti Hut (needs 3 hut tickets) via Whakapapa Valley Track.  Overnight = option to do extra hike along side of Ruapehu.  Then out to Bruce Road, with side trip to Silica Rapids/Springs/Viewpoint, and back to Whakapapa Village.

3)  Half day trip - Old Coach Road, Okahune.  Easy walk, interesting history, pretty scenery.

ACCOMMODATION:  I suggest that everyone tries to stay in either National Park Village or Whakapapa Village.  Options are below and as soon as you have a ride sorted, I suggest you book ASAP as spaces will fill up quickly for Easter.

1)  National Park Backpackers - Finlay Street, National Park Village, Tel: 07-8922870.  www.npbp.co.nz

2)  Plateau Lodge - Carroll Street, National PArk Village, Tel:[masked], 0800-861861.

3)  The Crossing Backpackers - Erua RoadEast (off SH4), National Park, Tel: 078922894.

4) Howard's Mountain Lodge, National Park Village, Tel:07-8922827.

5)  Whakapapa Motorcamp, Whakapapa Village, tents, cabins, lodge.  Tel: 07-8923897.

What an amazing hike! Thanks everyone for the great company. It's been fantastic! And thanks to the weather gods too - it couldn't have been any better!

What a fantastic trip! Perfect weather every day, stunning sunsets, full moon, great company. And I thoroughly recommend the Northern Circuit as a relatively easy tramp with all-round, all-the-time, stunning views.

Due to the uncertain condition of the car, I have to say I won't be able to make it before Friday. The soonest I can have my car checked is Saturday. Sorry guys, the last thing I expected to happen :(

Hi All, there's mixed reviews on the weather for this weekend ... was only really keen if I could head up for a day or so and not wait around or head on smaller trips. For this reason I've chosen to opt out. Hope you all enjoy though and look forward to other scenic tours.

Lent my car to a friend and had that back with a scratch from headlamp extened to front tyre. Not sure if the car is okay to drive up to Tongariro now as I can hear some noises when turning right or making stops. I shall provide another update soon

Hey guys. Sorry about this, but something's come up and I won't be able to make the trip. Hopefully you still have enough cars to do it.

@Kitty - email Jenny Re a ride. I'm away at the mo, but can call you when I get back after the weekend. Jenny was up for day hikes and has spaces in the car. This may be the option for everyone at the mo as the forecast is mixed sun and showers.

I tried the one day tongariro Crossing last time so will keen to do sth different this time. I stayed at Raetihi International airport and backpackers www.raethi.tv, last time..seems i have missed the meeting can I talk to someone about this[masked]? I haven;t got a tent n can i do first option?

okay, since there is no one needs a spot in my car. I've decided to stay there a few more days rather than just oneday for Tongariro Crossing. I also prefer leaving on Friday morning instead of Thursday night and miss the scenic view all the way up there. May finally end up this on my own :)

HI JENNY, finally I will go in Steve's car and so I don't need you to drive me
    BYE!!

    March 30, 2012

  • Glenn

My car currently has myself, Vicky+1, Melissa. So I have room for one more.

    March 28, 2012

  • Glenn

Ok. After meeting it looks like some of us really only want to do Tongariro crossing. So the tentative plan is to drive up after work (earliest 6:30pm) on Thursday (4-hour drive) and do the crossing on Friday. If the weather looks bad, we'll push it to Saturday and do something else Friday. Between myself and Jenny, we can take at most 10 inclusive. Another car would be useful if some want to stay longer than others.

Hi folks, a group of us from tonight's meeting are keen on the Tongariro Crossing, poss leaving Wgtn Thurs night (weather dependant) in time for a tramp first thing Fri morn.
This leaves our long wkds open to other stuff & also ensures we're prepared for a clear day of weather up there.
Options = Skotel backpackers Nat Park
= tent @ Whakapapa village camp site.
Costs & availability to come ... will need to book in early once agreed to avoid dissapointment as it's busy over Easter! :-)

  • Leticia M.

OK, I also booked on the circuit following your instructions. See you later!

    March 28, 2012

  • Fiona

Hi, for those wanting to do the Northern Circuit, you will need a tent (camping sites only) and to book ASAP.:
    6 April: Mangatepopo
    7 April: Oturere
    8 April: Waihohonu https://booking.doc.govt.nz/Menu.aspx?sg=TNC

Three of us are booked on the circuit, but I'm going to propose day trips for those who don't want to tramp and/or an overnighter if cars can be co-ordinated. The day trips leaflet for Tongariro is out of print, so this will require printing from the website. Cu 2moro!

  • Leticia M.

Hi, "bad" news about my car. I just went to WoF inspection and I failed. I must repair so many things that I'm not sure if it will available for easter. I will be able to confirm something by the end of this week

    March 27, 2012

  • Glenn

I have a car and can take 4 people, assuming 3 want to squeeze into the back seat.

    March 26, 2012

  • Fiona

Yes, Leticia. We need another car, or hire one and divide the costs equally. Does anybody else have a car? Has everyone sorted a ride out?

    March 26, 2012

  • Leticia M.

And for the 2 options I don't know anything at all in this country and so I can't take a decision, especially if I don't know yet the forecast. I would be keen for a days overnight walk but it will depend on the weather I guess. Fiona, why do we need to book the first opiton?

    March 26, 2012

  • Leticia M.

So for the moment we have only two cars, right? My car and Jenny's one...i think.

    March 26, 2012

  • Fiona

The place I was thinking of is called the Skotel...a hotel with backpacker rooms (3 per room). It has a spa pool as well. https://www.mainstay.co.nz/bookings/skotel-alpine-resort/index.cfm
And is at the start of the Northern Circuit for those who want to do it. I'll check out other alternatives in Whakapapa Village.

    March 25, 2012

  • Fiona

Okay, looks like we may be okay for tents...I have a 1-person and a 2-person. I'd suggest at the moment, a double-option plan.
    1) The Northern Circuit (a Great Walk) needs to be booked. Would take 4 days and at the moment, only really campsite left, but takes in Tongariro.
    2) Stay at backpackers at the start of Northern Crossing and do Tongariro Crossing and day trips/or an overnighter (Ruapehu).
    Who is interested in what?

    March 25, 2012

  • Melissa N.

No tent, but can ask around for one. Would prefer though if possible / plan A to stay in a hutt or hostel.

    March 25, 2012

  • Glenn

I have a small tramping tent which is almost big enough for one person.

    March 25, 2012

  • Leticia M.

I was planning to buy a tent but I did not get anything at a reasonable price for the moment. So if I can sleep in someone's tent it would great!

    March 25, 2012

  • Jenny

I got a small tent, good for one person, but if in need, okay for two. I believe this event is weather-dependet?

    March 25, 2012

  • Fiona

Okay, Tongariro and Ruapehu it is. I'm busy talking to Doc RE viability of an overnight trip, as well as the crossing. Also checking out availability of backpackers and will hopefully come up with an option by Sunday evening. I'll then email and you'll need to book into the accommodation ASAP after that if you're coming a it'll be filling up fast. Also, how many people have tents? We may need them as a backup if one of the huts is full.

    March 24, 2012

  • Glenn

I'd prefer tongariro. My car can take up to 4 more people.

    March 24, 2012

  • Leticia M.

I have a car and I live in town

    March 22, 2012

  • robyn g

Mt Taranaki (Egmont) looks good. If not this weekend then another.

    March 22, 2012

  • robyn g

If you do the tongariro crossing there is a bus that can drop you at the start and then pick you up at the end.

    March 22, 2012

  • Fiona

How many people have cars and how many passengers can you take? Does anybody else have a preference for destination? We could have a planning meeting next week or simply arrange online.
