Canoe/Kayak the Whanganui River #2

  • Feb 2, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Yes - I am serious!

We've tried it before... but ended up being rescued half way. It was one of those experiences you'll never forget in life. If you are interested have a look at the previous trip to be warned - this one can be serious! http://www.meetup.com/RoadTripsAotearoa/events/16041581/

I want to try it again. This time with a slight change of plans
1. Choose a different rental place
2. Choose a different rental place
3. Choose a different rental place
4. Choose a different rental place
5. Choose a different rental place

Done that: http://adriftnz.co.nz

6. Finish the trip
7. Don't get rescued (unless it is with a helicopter. I haven't had that yet)

- drive up Sat 2nd and stay over night
- do the canoeing 3rd - 5th Feb
- Easy drive back 6th

Let me know as soon as possible and I'll provide you with final costs and things to do (e.g. booking the huts / camp sites)!

Some more details

Canoeing Whakahoro to Pipiriki - Canoe Hire NZ $185

This includes charge for canoe and paddling equipment hire (dry barrels, paddles, and buoyancy vests), and transport from National Park Village to and from the river. The charge does not include Department of Conservation Hut Passes, nor any clothing or camping equipment. Clothing and camping equipment is available for hire and Hut passes can be purchased through Adrift (please organise yourself if needed).

We are planning to stay at The Park Travellers lodge http://www.the-park.co.nz/ on Saturday and on the way back Tuesday night. Once we’ve got numbers confirmed I’ll try to book the best available option of rooms. You can check out prices online as an indication.

Everyone who comes along - can you please book the camp sites as follows:

John Coull Campsite Sun 3rd

Tieke Campsite Mon 4th

Jaana Where shall I meet you sat morning. I dont have a car so I need to arrange transport. Could you email me your number again?

    January 31, 2013

    • Jaana

Hey. I've emailed yesterday and was wondering why u 2 are not answering. Must be something wrong. Its 7s. So meeting at central railway station probably not a good idea. Can u catch the 10;30am train to Tawa and get off at redwood station? Will bring you home on Wednesday though! No[masked]

    • Ashley P.

Oh phewf! I was hoping for a bit later start anyways! Def sounds like a brilliant plan. See you then!

      February 1, 2013

  • Jaana

10:14am train (Kapiti line to Porirua / Waikanae) brings you 10:30 to Redwood station. CU there tomorrow morning!!!!

    February 1, 2013

  • Jaana

OK - The room is booked. And everyone can pay on the day, so you don't need to pay me upfront. I just had to leave my CC details. So don't run away without paying :)

Re driving there - we'd like to leave Saturday morning. No hurry, but should aim to be in National Park early afternoon. The Canoe company will come around, give us safety briefing and gear.

Please everyone remember to bring tents etc. and also dry sacks to put your stuff in. Barrels supplied might not keep dry when you fall in :) We'll need to fit with 4 and all gear into one car. So please pack all that's necessary - and avoid doo much other things.

    January 25, 2013

    • Ashley P.

So we get the safety briefing the day before then we leave the next day is that right?

      January 28, 2013

    • Jaana

I don't know all the details. But yes. They'll be there and at least supply us with gear. Final briefing will probably be at the river next day. But we've got experiences and can help anyway :-)

Hey guys - just confirming: Are you OK for me to book a Quad Loft room in the lodge? It will be 42$ Per Person per night, so 82 each. I'd need you to transfer money too - need to book and pay upfront

As I said before, also happy to stay two night. Just to confirm accommodation: Are we all going for that Quad loft room or are there any changes of mind? Cheers!

Most of the seats in the canoes we got from adrift were quite lousy (in a pain in the butt kind of way), so you may want to bring something *firm* that you can strap on to the seating area. You may be luckier than us, and they may fix the seating, but don't count on it.

Tip2: buy straps if you wear glasses/shades or you may lose them when you tip the canoes over and go sprawling into the water. Hats don't float either...

Duct/Silver tape may work as well for both solutions. ;)

      January 23, 2013

    • Jaana

Thanks Peter!!! I'll get in touch with the guys and will ask. He told me it's all new canoes - so I am surprised to hear it's been uncomfortable. Hope the trip was good anyway!!!

Hey everyone - Conoes and huts are quickly booking out. May I ask you to make up your mind by tomorrow if you want to join? Let me know - I'll book the trip for the 4 of us (Steve, Joe and Ashley) now and will prepay the $185. I'll try to get more added when you decide later, can't promise though

Hey everyone - The plan is now to take leave 4th and 5th February and do the trip over that time 2nd - 6th Feb. So please indicate with RSVP's if you are still keen! There will be cost involved upfront to deposit for the trip and accommodation and we'll also need to book the campsites. I'll confirm details asap but would like to have final numbers of people who are able to make it.

    Preferred option
    - drive up Sat 2nd and stay over night
    - do the canoeing 3rd - 5th Feb
    - Easy drive back 6th

    January 14, 2013

    • Jaana

Rental Sunday 3rd works! I'll just need final numbers as soon as possible. If you can't make that date - can you please change RSVP to "No". And if you are on the waiting list but definately keen let me know. I'll arrange as good as possible.

      January 14, 2013

  • Jaana

@Stewart - Can you do me a favour and check with the Canoe rental place what they think about the inflateable kayak? I've been on the river and it's been pretty rough. Although not many rocks - more rapids. Not sure how it is in dryer periods though. I'll need you to make that call please. I wouldn't be comfortable but you probably know better than I do :)

Just want to know..when is this going to be?

    January 12, 2013

  • Jaana

Great guys. Just announce a host for the weekend and I can set up a separate event for you. Peter... Mae, you ok to host?

    January 10, 2013

    • Mae

i can host but do we have someone in the group confident enough to lead the kayaking or canoeing trip?

      January 10, 2013

    • Jaana

This is a good point Mae - Please make sure that there is someone experienced! I'll set up a separate meetup for you to edit for the weekend 18th :)

      January 11, 2013

  • Jaana

All - I'll try to get the 4/5th February off and do this trip somehow between 2nd and 6th February. Will probably decide early next week and let you all know!

    January 11, 2013

  • Mae

I'd be happy to do it as well if the weather forecast is good as I'm also having a foot and knee injury and can also only do water based things atm.

Hello! I just joined this meetup coz I heard about this plan, I am very keen on this for the upcoming long weekend :-)

      January 10, 2013

  • Jaana

Hey all - as Mae said I've planned a hiking trip over that weekend and would like to do this trip a bit later in summer. But if you still want to go ahead - get in touch with this guy:
    Stewart Barclay
    Adrift Outdoors Ltd
    3 Waimarino-Tokaanu Rd
    intersection Highways 4 and 47
    National Park VIllage
    ph[masked]http://adriftnz.co.nz

I've been in touch with him and found them to be the best alternative for renting canoes. He can supply you with all you need - including a weather forecast to not get into trouble ;)

    January 10, 2013

  • Jaana

Hello everyone! I've started looking around for different rental places to be safer this time - and maybe even get kayaks rather than canoes. I'll keep you up to date. Maybe a good time to start thinking about the date too! How about the long weekend 19-21st January? Or better later to avoid crowds on a public holiday?

    December 13, 2012

    • Jaana

Oi - thanks Joe! That might be a bit crowded on the river then! we should choose another weekend.

      December 14, 2012

    • Ken

19-21 Jan is good for me

      January 9, 2013

  • Mae
