Wellness Walks is a walking support group for those who have, or have had Depression and/or Anxiety. The walks take place in Hampshire and are located within the district wards of Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton. All walks are around green spaces and accessible by both public transport and car.
Who is this group for?
The walks are for any person who suffers from depression/anxiety and for those people who have suffered in the past, but who also want a supportive activity to help keep themselves well.
What is this group for?
The aim of the group is to aid people in their recovery by offering scheduled short walks in green spaces supported by others with similar experiences in a safe, confidential, friendly and non-judgmental way.
What are group members expected to do?
Turn up around ten minutes before the scheduled walk time, before setting off we ask everyone to introduce themselves (so we don't lose anyone!) to the group. You can use the the group however suits you - to connect with others, to simply stroll and be active, or pop your headphones on and simply walk with the group.
Can group members bring a guest?
Of course, you can bring a friend or family member along for support, as long as they are aware of the walking route and confident they can walk it; all guests are treated like any other group member and are expected like wise, to keep to any rules pertaining to the group e.g. confidentiality.
What happens on a walk?
We meet at the starting point of the walk around ten minutes before the scheduled time to set off, the group leader will gather everyone to introduce themselves and then give a brief overview of the space we are to walk around. During the walk, around thirty minutes in, the group leader will stop the walk to gather round for a "Mindful Moment" or "Pause for Thought", where, if you like, you can take a moment to literally smell the roses and be made aware of the natural environment around you. After this, the walk continues in a circular fashion back to the starting point, where the walk leader will inform you of the location for the next walk and information on other walking groups and other forms of support you can access in the area. In addition, if the end point for a walk is located near to a cafe or pub, the walk leader will offer all group members an invitation to join them for a drink if they so wish, all group members however are not expected to join together after a walk and are not obliged to do so; it is simply an option that is offered.
To our four legged friends, you are more than welcome on the walks, but please ensure your owner is kept on the leash throughout the walk as a consideration to other group members, thank you.
