Waikanae to Paraparaumu (via the beach)

The walk: From the Waikanae railway station, we'll follow Te Araroa down the Waikanae River to the estuary (pictured), then along the beach (stopping at Paraparaumu Beach for lunch) as far Raumati Beach, where we'll head up the Wharemauku Stream to Paraparaumu.

Rating: Moderate walk - about 17km of walking overall, over half of which is on the beach, with the rest mostly on gravel tracks. It's flat the whole way.

Bring: The Recommended list, lunch.

Getting there: We'll meet on the station platform at Waikanae. If you're coming by train from Wellington, you'll want to get the 9.14am Kapiti line train, which is due at Waikanae at 10.14.

If you're driving, you'll want to park in the main Paraparaumu station car park, join the train to Waikanae there at 10.09, then walk back to your car! We'll start walking as soon as everyone's arrived, or at 10.20 if anyone hasn't arrived or sent a message by then (I'll send my mobile number in an email the evening before the walk).

Getting away: We should be back in Paraparaumu in time for the 3.05pm train to Wellington (arrives 4pm), or for optional post-walk refreshments at Monteiths Kapiti Junction, or somewhere in Coastlands.

Cancellation: If the weather forecast looks dodgy enough to cancel, I'll email a cancellation by 8.15am on the day.

Very nice walk, though a bit too long.

Hi Gim. It was one of our longer walks, however both the time and the distance matched the description. If you'd rather do a shorter walk, some will be posted for June in the coming weeks - including the one I put up tonight!
