The walk: We'll head up Ara Harakeke from the station car park. When we get to Whenua Tapu, we'll go a few hundred metres up Airlie Road (just over the bridge over the railway line), and take the Taua Tapu track back towards Plimmerton. At the end of Taua Tapu, we'll go down The Track for a bit, then turn onto the track that goes steeply down through the reserve to Reserve Road. Finally, we'll turn left when we reach the shore and head back round to the station.
There's only about 8-9km of walking, but the first bit of Taua Tapu goes up quite steeply, then the track through the reserve goes down very steeply and slippery in places. And the first couple of kms up Ara Harakeke are quite noisy next to State Highway One. We should be back to Plimmerton station in time for the 4.01pm train to Wellington, or for optional refreshments somewhere in Plimmerton (suggestions welcome).
Getting there: The train that leaves Wellington at 1.14pm is due at Plimmerton at 1.43pm - go through the underpass at the north end of the platform and turn right in the underpass to get to the car park. If you're driving, turn left at the roundabout after coming through Mana, head towards Palmers Garden World, and turn right over a little bridge into the car park.
Bring: The Recommended list. Sturdy footwear recommended.
Cancellation: Will only cancel if conditions would be hazardous, and will advise by mid-morning if this is the case.
