We've developed five categories for Wellywalks, to help you decide if a walk is right for you. However, because the categories are broad, and people can interpret terms such as "moderate" or "steep" differently, we describe each walk in some detail to give you a better idea of what the walk will be like. If you still have questions, please contact the host before the walk to ensure you're ready for it.
Please don’t sign up for a challenging or strenuous walk unless you have already comfortably done a moderate walk with us.
Stroll: no more than 2 hours; paved trail or even terrain; flat or gentle hill; pace to accommodate slowest member of the group. Examples: Botanic Gardens, Waterfront, Percy's Reserve.
Easy: up to 4 hours; terrain may include unpaved trail or beach; total elevation gain less than 200 metres; some hills, not too steep or long; slow but steady pace (up to 3k per hour). Examples: Eastern Walkway, Trelissick Park, Massey Memorial
Moderate: up to 6 hours; some sections of trail may be unpaved and rough (ie walking on rocks at the beach); total elevation gain less than 400 metres (estimate); may have more or longer steep sections either up or down; steady pace ie up to 4k per hour. Examples: Butterfly Creek variation, Mt Kaukau, Tinakori Hill
Challenging: may exceed 6 hours; large sections of trail are rough, steep and/or slippery; elevation gain may exceed 400 meters; may have multiple hills and/or long, steep sections; may be exposed (windy) in places; steady pace ie up to 5k per hour. Examples: Catchpool Loop, City to Sea walkway, Wairaka walkway
Strenuous: Meets or exceeds the challenging criteria, for example bush tracks. May be in remote bush area, so members need to bring more emergency gear ie space blanket, torch and extra food. The leader may require proof that attendees are physically ready for the walk and have the right equipment. Examples: Island bay to Brooklyn wind turbine, Belmont traverse, Tongariro crossing.
