A Study on Freemasonry - Freedom and Freemasonry

On March 22, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. the Masonic Philosophical Society will be hosting a study group at the Beaman Memorial Library. Each month a different topic, ranging from philosophy and science to religion and metaphysics, is discussed and debated.

March's topic will be conducted by Anouk Van Opstal on Freemasonry and Freedom. After a short lecture a discussion and debate by the group will follow.

Freedom is one of the fundamental elements that is continually sought after by men and women across the ages and the globe. But what does freedom and liberty mean? What is positive and negative liberty? Through the study of these concepts, we will discuss if we are truly Free.

Join us for this month's study group. This group for men and women, which is open to the public, is where non-members can learn more about Freemasonry, as well as meet local Freemasons. Please arrive 10 minutes early so we can save you a seat.

We all see freedom from different prespectives and that is wonderful, but if we reflect a little bit, we have to realize that everything, including freedom, is relative and nothing is absolute.

I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

However, are you really free in all the ramifications of the word? Say, there is an "obnoxious rule," for which a harsh penalty exists. Although you are free to break it, given that you may not desire the penalty, are you really free since breaking the rule might (within the social construct) strip you of the freedom to avoid the penalty?

Could it be that freedom is relative?

I really enjoyed this topic. Everyone had a lot of interesting insight, particularly about the ideological differences between Eastern and Western cultures. Looking forward to the next meeting!
