Hike the Macricostas Preserve, on the Meeker Trail, Washington, CT

More specifically, behind the red house at 124 Christian Street, Washington, just off of Route 202, north of the intersection with Route 47. Please see the map and site info at:

http://steeprockassoc.org/pdf/map_macricostas.pdf

This preserve is a part of the Steep Rock Association.

Shelagh will be our leader on this expedition, having had past experience on this trail.  This will be a leisurely hike of exploration, although there is a steep climb up to the ridge.  Our aim is not to race through the woods, but to see and experience the wilderness provided.  There will be a loop at the top to traverse.   You should be rewarded with scenic views of Lake Waramaug.

Wear proper footwear, bring water, and layer your clothing appropriately.  Cameras should not be overlooked.  Also -- for most hikes I've heard about, leaders wait about 15 minutes for late arrivals, so please be prompt.

Optional: At the end of the hike, those of us who wish will share a small brunch potluck of edibles among each other.  We'll find a good, preferably aesthetic, spot near to parking to sit (bring a folding chair or blanket, just in case a good rock isn't available), and socialize a while longer.  No fires are permitted, so consider your potluck item accordingly.  Also, as some people may have allergies or food restrictions, while you may bring what you like, be prepared to let others know what's in your share.

Hi there - just checking in to see how everyone fared with Sandy and that all still intend to hike this Sunday. I did try to reach Barb but haven't heard back from her. Please respond to this so that we know you're still planning to come....if I don't hear from people, I'll assume they don't have power or internet and won't be coming. I plan to join Amy at the restaurant she suggested....please let us know if you are as well. Thanks, looking forward to a nice day Sunday!

Don't forget, folks -- tonight the clocks change, and you get an extra hour before the hike to sleep in or do chores...

Hope this post finds everyone warm and dry in the aftermath of storm Sandy. There is a neat little lunch spot called Hidden Valley Eatery on Route 47 (Bee Brook Rd), just a couple miles away from Macricostas. I've had both breakfast and lunch there, and found the food tasty and satisfying. Would anyone like to head out for a meal following our hike?

Amy, just checked this out online and it sounds like it fits our goal...eating local and delicious food! Count me in!

Amy was mentioning the other day that since it might be chilly after the hike to stay still in one place to eat, perhaps we could brunch at a place she knows in the area, as an optional end to our hike, for those who have time to do? Thoughts?
