CASTLEWOOD "CREEK RAT DOGS", our easiest & coolest summer hike up the cool creek

OUR EASIEST & COOLEST SUMMER HIKE.

****PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE HIKE DESCRIPTION!*****

More of a play day in the water than a hike.  Just a way to get our pups outside for some fun.  Good in the HOTTEST weather!   YOU WILL BE WADING IN THE CREEK, wear appropriate shoes.

Your shoes and your dog will be wet, that's the idea.

We walk from the cars to the creek, up along the creek on the trail, then back down the middle of the creek in the water, then back to the cars, about 3 miles.  Mostly shaded, TOTALLY LEVEL and lots of time in the waters of the cold, spring fed creek.

AS ALWAYS, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT GOES ON, GO TO OUR "CALENDAR" TAB  (on our homepage)  AND CHECK PREVIOUS HIKES TO THIS LOCATION.

Allow 2 hours for this, it's about play time!  You can stay longer and swim in the river, if you want to.  Current is down and it's plenty safe to swim.

DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON SHORT LEASH!  Maybe some free time when we're IN THE CREEK, but not on trail.  Some mountain bikers, but not too bad.  Lots of dogs/people here.  You have to control your dog in this park, it's very crowded and they're very strict!

As always, limit of 2 DOGS PER PERSON

********************

WE HIT THE TRAIL PROMPTLY AT 10:00, arrive a little early.

***********************

SEED TICKS are out, FRONTLINE YOUR DOG.

You might want sunscreen, creek is in full sun.

Secure phone/car keys/cameras in ziplock bags!

About 3 miles, allow 2 hours.  We goof off a lot .

IMPORTANT....COME TO THE RIGHT PARKING LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

We meet at the BEACH PARKING LOT, all the way at the end of the road past the RR tracks.  There are shaded spots on the right, by the picnic tables, just before the main parking lot, which is in full sun.

Be kind to your dog, PARK IN THE SHADE, not in the main parking lot, YOUR CAR WILL BE HOT WHEN WE FINISH.  Don't put Fido into an oven for the ride home!

AFTER THE MAIN HIKE, WE GO TO THE BEACH FOR MORE PLAY TIME.

You can swim in the river here after the hike WITH your dog.   Dogs are not too welcome in the main beach area (it's pretty crowded), but we walk up the river to a very quiet spot to play.  You can skip this part and go home, if you want to, but we have a lot of fun here.  Beach is mostly sand.  CURRENT IS DOWN, GOOD SWIMMIN' FOR DOGS AND PEOPLE.

 DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

Manchester or Big Bend to Ries Road to park entrance. The mapping feature at the top of the page is very good, if you need a road map.  WE MEET AT THE BEACH PARKING LOT!  Once inside the park, drive ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE ROAD to the beach area.We lose people all the time here because they go to the wrong lot.

If you have questions, ask before the time of the hike, my cell phone is in my backpack at hike time.

NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES. Short leash only.  Keep your dog on leash.

BATHROOMS AT THE PARKING LOT.  NO PUBLIC WATER.

Impressive, I don't know how you train them to do all that. Also, don't know how you keep up with them in the ring. I would be falling down, as the dog went on!

We had a good, small of group of ladies with great dogs. I think that all stayed plenty cool, except for going through the field at the beginning. We walked all the way to the river in the creek, probably an hour in the water. Dogs had a ball. Thanks to Helena/LOLA, Melinda/LULU and Deborah/EVAN for a very nice morning and a good "Cabin Fever" Hike on a blistering hot day. SISSY is crashed, hope your pups are also having good dreams of catching that deer that we saw!

Lola and I had a great time today! What a wonderfully relaxing walk! After a good brushing, Lola sat outside to "get hot" an activity she enjoys. Back inside snoring away!! Thanks so much!

"Sleeping Dog" photos are fun after these hikes, you guys can upload them if you want to.

Karen, what's the best way to describe how to get to the creek from today's hike to others - my friends want to take their dogs somewhere to cool off, too. Thanks.

There's a link to the park on the hike description. The ranger station has maps in a box outside the office, or more detailed maps inside (no dogs allowed inside). The best place to park is in the first parking lot past the creek bridge. I only make people go all the way to the beach to get some "miles" on our hikes. There is also a map link on the hike description, you can copy & paste. OR... they can just go to our hike site and look at the previous hikes to get an idea of what goes on in the creek. Maybe they'll join our group!

Everybody be sure that your RSVP is current, we don't want to wait any longer than needed in this heat, but also don't want to leave anyone behind.

JUST PARK YOUR CAR IN THE SHADE!

I guarantee that your dogs won't get overheated on this hike, unless they're afraid of wading in the water. Might be the only opportunity to get them out of the house for some fun in this heat.

SISSY and I did this hike on Thursday by ourselves. The first 15 minutes, it was warm going through the field to the first swimmin' hole stop. After we hit the creek, it was a wonderful, cool hour in the water. We walked all the way to the river in the creek, some neat new scenery. Only a few minutes from the water to our cars after that. We should be absolutely fine on this hike for Saturday, even in 99 degree heat.

Bummed we can't. It'll be a perfect day for a creek stomp.
On a good note, I did finally find a figure 8 harness and 30 ft lead, that floats, for Xena aka 'missy thinks she can be queen of meramec' ;-)
    Have a great time!

Yep, it's gonna be hot, hot, hot. Summer is back! That's what this particular hike is designed for. Can't go anywhere else, you might as well let your dog walk in the cold water for exercise. SISSY is going to have a bad case of cabin fever, she'll need a day out with the Dog Pack!

We'll be out of town but looks like this one is gonna be steamy! I figured that hot august weather would catch up with us sooner or later! Gonna be a good day for this hike :)
