CANCELLED due to heat FOREST PARK DOG HIKE, Thursday evening

  • Forest Park Visitor Center

5595 Grand Drive, St. Louis, MO (map)

    38.644005 -90.280860

  • This is a NO HOST hike.   If it works, we can make it  A REGULAR THURSDAY EVENING EVENT while we have enough daylight.

Some of our members have asked for this, we'll try it and see if it works.

MEET AT THE VISITORS CENTER STEPS (above),  and walk about 1.5 miles around the Grand Basin, then past the Boathouse and back to the Visitor's Center. Paved trail, some hills, sometimes crowded.

Allow about 1 hour for this slow paced hike.  Group will leave promptly at 6:00, arrive a little early and look for the dog packers.

Use map feature above, if you need a map.

I've never hiked this, so any comments regarding it would be most appreciated. I will watch the weather and cancel, if necessary. Some of our members are familiar with Forest Park, hopefully some of them will sign up.

If anyone would like to volunteer to HOST this hike, let me know and I'll set you up.

I don't know the trails.  Would suggest that you print a map from the above link and take it with you.  No one will actually be LEADING this hike, you guys just work out the route.  Try to stick to the basic outline for this first one, then you can let me know where you would like to go and we'll change the hike description for future hikes.

This is something new for WCDW, I usually know what I'm scheduling. Not this time. Just check who is attending, look for them (or their dog) and make your own hike. Please keep your RSVP current for this, otherwise it won't work and I won't repeat it.  If you're late, the group will probably leave without you.

I cancelled today's hike and rescheduled it for next Thursday evening. Also cancelled my morning hike today. The SATURDAY hike at CASTLEWOOD CREEK is still on. Once we hit the creek water, we'll be fine and stay cool. I know that Sissy needs to get out. We're going to go to Castlewood today to explore the other end of the creek, we might just walk the entire creek and forget the trail altogether.

At this point, I'm thinking we should cancel this hike. I definitely won't be coming with Lily. I just walked her this evening a little earlier than 6:00 and the heat was about the most she could take, even though it was a very short walk. We're still both getting used to the humidity, but in even in Colorado she would not be up to hiking at 97 degrees, if it gets that hot. If you canceled the morning hike due to heat Karen, this one will be that much hotter. I'm going to change my RSVP, but the rest of you humans, please weigh in! I would love to do this walk in more reasonable temps.

I'm so sorry, but I have to cancel too. My parents were watching Lando while we were out of town, and we won't get him back until later in the evening. I could do most evenings except Sun and Mon though!

I'm going to change my RSVP to a "no" so it's official. Hopefully the weather will cooperate soon:-)

Karen, there's a lake by the boathouse and there are little creeks that run through the park depending on the trails you take. I agree with Pam on canceling this walk while the temps are so hot. Maybe when it's cooler we can spend more time walking and finding good trails to take. The choices can be endless!

You guys talk on this hike. If you would prefer it as a Saturday or Sunday regular event, let me know. I can repeat it weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Also discuss if you want a longer route. Some people want a little longer walk, if they're driving a ways for a weekend hike. A 3 mile hike is about an hour of walking. Somebody take some pictures! That really helps when new people are trying to decide if they want to go, they can look at the trail from previous hikes.

So, there are spots to get the dogs into the water?

If Truman goes to the country with my parents on Thursday I may be arriving solo. I guess that won't be a bad thing if it's super hot. I do worry about him in the heat since he is part pug. I'll check this site tomorrow to see if it's cancelled due to heat.

I've never been to the visitor center before, but when I lived here two decades ago I lived across the street from Forest Park. It is only mildly hilly in some parts and is a very easy trail. I will try to arrive early and look for everyone as this hike is actually not too far of a drive for me from Illinois. Let's just keep an eye on the weather as far as the heat etc. Dogs should be able to cool off in ponds if necessary.

Thanks for the info. It's been a LONG TIME since I was in Forest Park, like decades!

You guys who have signed up.... keep in touch with each other and make COMMENTS here. It's going to be hot, but this is a pretty short hike. Please, please, please, keep your RSVP up to date, under the circumstances. Do you still want to do this hike? If you think it's going to be too hot, I can postpone this another week. Communication is going to be the key to making this work.

Any comments on the difficulty level (how hilly is this route?) and is the trail paved?
