Online Assignment- DIY

  • February 15, 2013 · 11:45 PM

I'm always curious about photographer's that find life hacks to expensive photo gear. So for this assignment, I want you to make something that helps you as a photographer, take a photo if it, and explain how it works and most importantly how it was made.
Some suggestions are backgrounds, background stands, reflectors or defusers, clamps, pano tracks, light modifiers etc. So head off to the hardware store, grab some duct tape (gaffer's tape for most of us) and build something. I'm not really looking for awesome photos on this assignment. I'm more looking for critical thinking and problem solving. Some of my favorite tools are white card stock, gaffer's tape, skate boards, bendy wire, hand drills, glue gun and clamps.
As per normal rules- you may submit up to two images. Please use a web resolution (640 on the long) jpeg to make sure there is enough room for everyone else to participate. Most important on this assignment is to explain how you made your product and how it works.
Taking images from now until Feb 15th. On Feb 16th, please remember to vote for your favorite device (not your own). SInce this is a thinking assignment, I'm gonna up the prize for this one. Either a one on one session with me for an hour to pick my brain OR a $20 gift certificate to Shutter Bug- compliments of Yuzu Studios.
So let's get those creative juices flowing!

Well- it looks like a tie between Larry's clamps and my beauty dish. So I'm gonna be a good sport and turn it over to Larry. Congrats Larry- job well done. We'll talk details later. Thanks everyone for participating. Some really great ideas here. For people that didn't make the deadline, you may still add the assignment folder to show off or for feed back.

All of these are really cool! I'm having such a hard time picking one- I'm voting for the light box. I love the clamp pod, but I did have help in it so I don't think it's fair. I will be counting votes in the morning. If you haven't voted yet- please do.

As much as I like a bunch of the ideas and will incorporate them into my bar of tricks. My vote is predicated on the keep it simple approach. Clamp plus fork. Larry. Ingenuity goes to Bobbie with flex lite and clamp.

I hadn't planned on participating until I got caught up in trying some new equipment and didn't have any stands. Trying to rig up something on the spur of the moment was actually kind of fun. Good topic.

I built a light box and have posted 2 shots in the photo section. If anybody is interested in seeing how I built it, let me know and I will either take more shots of bring it along, next time I come up that way.

I would prefer a new pic. After the assignment closes, submit your old pics so we can see what you built.

Do the same timeline rules apply for this photo or could we use an older pic that shows the device?
