Group Shoot- Cataract Falls- Tentative

This date is tentative and subject to change based on conditions.

This is one of my favorite trails in the Mt Tam area. The cascading falls wind down a mile plus trail, with most of the action about 1/2 mile in. This area is great for capturing smokey water with neutral density filters, or capturing the forest.

Gear- a sturdy tripod and release, a ND filter, at least a wide angle lens, and maybe a telephoto and macro lens too. A lunch, water, and layers. I find a wet proof cushion helpful to kneel or sit on. Garden pads work great.

About the trail-

This is a dark, STEEP trail with a slick surface. This trail is only for those that can handle a steep grade and slippery mud. The elevation gain is about 1100 feet, with most of the falls being at[masked] feet elevation. There are no bathrooms, and parking is only available for a few cars. Car pooling is mandatory. Along this trail are several types of beautiful mushrooms that are great for macro work. Picking mushrooms in the Marin Water Shed is illegal.

Please try to carpool with someone. there are only a few parking spots available on this trail. If we all drive separately, there will NOT be enough spots for our group, let alone others that want to use the trail. Phones do not work in the area. I think the best way out is D street towards Olema and on towards Bolinas and then up the back of the hill. You can go other ways, but from my scouting, it will be more traffic.

Hey all- we're on! I scouted this yesterday and there was enough water to make this happen. Because of the parking situation, carpooling is monitory. I have three spaces, maybe four if we wanna be really cozy in my car. I will be at johnny Javas in Cotati from 10:15 to 10:30 in a dark blue outback. The trail is dry but full of little tiny rocks to slip on. Bring water and pack light.

Can I carpool with someone? I can join on 880, on any of the Oakland/Alameda exits.

While we have plenty of time to organize carpools, Simone, you're welcome to ride with me.

Well we have gotten rain but not last week. I did see a brief article in the Marin IJ that inferred that this was a great time for the Cascade Falls trail. Whether that translates to great photography, I don't know.

I will try to scout this again in the next few days. I have been in Italy so I don't know what the weather has been like.

Well I tried to scout this yesterday, the trail was closed from storm damaged. Hopefully it will be repaired before our trip but no promises. I will try to scout alternatives.

being that we just got a monster amount of rain, I recommend going now on your own. There is water flowing for the moment, but I can't promise what will happen in two weeks.

Unless someone has a van, I'm going to limit this to no more than 15 people because of the parking situation. Please expect to travel with a full car. Like other groups with carpools, expect to be a driver, and if not driving, please give the driver $5 towards gas and wear. I will arrange car pooling areas as the dates comes closer.
