Bobbi,

Here's a good link with info on solar eclipse photography:  http://www.diyphotography.net/photographing-a-solar-eclipse-random-tips

Here's how to protect your camera and sensor with welding glass: http://www.diyphotography.net/use-welding-glass-as-10-stops-nd-filter

For the eclipse it is recommended that you use #14 welding glass, not #10.  You can find it at any welding supply store or online: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041URBRK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=diy0c-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0041URBRK

Also, from what I've read the coast may not be the best place to catch the eclipse, as the loss of heat during the event can lead to fog formation.  If anyone has a suggestion for a location away from the coast, yet with an unobstructed view of the horizon, please chime in.

Hey all-

After doing some research, I found that shooting this eclipse without a proper solar filter could be dangerous for your sensor. I also found out that ND filers will NOT be good enough to protect your gear. So, for the safety of everyone's gear, I have technically canceled the group shoot on Sunday.

If you have a solar filter, a pin hole camera or have the resources to use use film you might be able to pull off some decent shots safely. However on digital cameras without the hard to find and expensive filters, I strongly suggest just letting this one go. Kick back, grab some iced tea and make some memories with the family. Please research this before going out on your own to do it anyway, as your gear can seriously get damaged.

My apologies to the group, and to all those wanting to go. It sounded like a great idea at the time, but we all make wrong choices once in a while.

Happy and Safe Shooting-

Bobbi
