Beginners snowshoe at Brainard Lake (rescheduled), Sun. Mar. 31 at 8 AM

Just for beginners who want to take a slow easy flat snowshoe trip. Brainard Lake is beautiful and one of the great places in Colorado and it says so in the Denver Post!

Meet at the park-n-Ride in Arvada at 56th. Ave. and Wadsworth Bypass at 8 AM or head straight to Brainard Lake at 9:45 AM. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to drive and we allow people up to 15 minutes to show up, particularly in the mountains.

Directions: From the park-n-Ride at 56th. Ave. and Wadsworth Bypass, take Wadsworth Bypass north and follow Wadsworth until you get to U.S. 36 (Boulder Turnpike). Take U.S. 36 north to Boulder and then head north on 28th. St. to Canyon Blvd. Turn left on Canyon Blvd. (CO Rte. 119) and follow west until you get to Nederland. Take CO Rte. 72 (Peak to Peak Hwy.) until you get to Brainard Lake Rd., just north of Ward. Take Brainard Lake Rd. west until you get to the entrance to Brainard Lake Recreation Area.

Carpooling is recommended as parking may be limited. However, there is NO fee for parking at Brainard Lake Recreation Area in winter (there is in summer). Park in the lot before the seasonal gate for winter recreation. New toilet facilities and warming hut adjacent are complete and available for public use. Steve will be holding a Colorado flag at both the park-n-Ride and at Brainard Lake Recreation Area to help you identify him and the meetup group.

There are several trails in the area according the Colorado Mountain Club map:

http://www.cmcboulder.org/resources/brainardskimap.pdf

We will be taking the Snowshoe Trail (near the entrance gate) to Brainard Lake and will return by the Brainard Lake Rd. It is about 2.5 miles from the entrance gate to Brainard Lake via the Snowshoe Trail and 2 miles back by the Brainard Lake Rd. so count on about 4.5 miles of snowshoeing. Total time should be about 4 hours. There is about 250 feet of elevation gain (10,100' to 10,350').

The website for Brainard Lake Recreation Area is here:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72BTJw8jAwjQL8h2VAQAzHJMsQ!!/?ss=110210&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003741&navid=1100...

Dress warmly and in layers and be prepared for cold/windy weather - Brainard Lake is over 10,000 feet in elevation. Bring adequate food and water. Sunscreen is also recommended as the sun can burn skin quite easily at high elevations in the snow.

Steve's cell phone number is (720) 626-1546. Note: there is no cell phone reception at Brainard Lake.

Finally, there is a chance that inclement weather may force postponement or cancellation of this meetup, so check with the website beforehand.

Finally, a good forecast for Brainard Lake for tomorrow, though still a bit breezy (that seems to be common there). Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Breezy, with a west wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. There's still at least a couple of feet of snow on the ground there from what I can see on webcams; some ski resorts still report 3 to 4 feet are left. So, after a month of postponements, the snowshoe tomorrow is finally on!

Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Can someone suggest me where to rent snow shoes from?

I've had to postpone this once again for another week due to very cold wind chills. Sorry about that. The weather doesn't seem to be cooperating this month.

    March 22, 2013

    • Steve Van V.

Snow showers likely, mainly after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16. Wind chill values as low as -15. Blustery, with a west wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

      March 23, 2013

    • Steve Van V.

So with gusty winds and such bitter cold wind chills I don't think it will be very pleasant, so I've had to postpone this once again. At least the moisture is needed.

I just remembered that March 31 is Easter Sunday. Does this conflict with anyone's plans.

Once again, it looks like inclement weather for the planned snowshoe hike:

From the NWS for Brainard Lake:

    Sunday

A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16. Wind chill values as low as -14. West wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 16 mph. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

    March 22, 2013

  • Steve Van V.

I'm going to postpone the snowshoe hike once again to the next weekend. I just wanted to wait until the morning before to be sure of the forecast.

From the NWS for Brainard Lake for Sunday:

Snow showers likely with areas of blowing snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Windy, with a west wind 16 to 21 mph increasing to 28 to 33 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Unfortunately, the NWS weather forecast for Brainard Lake calls for snow and gusty winds on Sunday, which doesn't look too pleasant for a snowshoe. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.059585383185635&lon=-105.56659698486328

Snow showers likely, mainly after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Very windy, with a west wind 15 to 25 mph increasing to 26 to 36 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. I may have to postpone it by a week once again. Last year there were two snowshoe hikes at Brainard Lake, and they were both postponed twice, so maybe the third time's the charm. It's getting into the start of spring, so this can't be postponed much longer.

I am so very sorry but I cannot participate after all.

    March 9, 2013

  • Steve Van V.

I've rescheduled this for Sun. March 17. Sun. March 10 is the "Frozen Dead Guy" weekend in Nederland, so it would be pretty crowded then.

Hopefully the weather will be better, but if not we can wait for the next good weekend.

    March 2, 2013

  • Steve Van V.

I'm going to have to postpone this due to the chance for snow tomorrow. At any rate, it will be very windy, which isn't very pleasant:

Sunday A 50 percent chance of snow after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 40. Windy, with a west wind 23 to 33 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Oh, this is just what I'm looking for! But I have to be back in Denver by 1:00 - can I make it?

    February 26, 2013

    • Marsea

Thanks! I hope you offer it again soon; I'd better bow out. Also, is it okay to bring a dog on most of your hikes?

      February 27, 2013

    • Steve Van V.

Sorry you can't make this one. I think dogs are allowed on some trails and not others - it varies from place to place.

      February 27, 2013

  • Steve Van V.

Given the recent snowfall, I thought it would be nice to do this again this upcoming weekend.
