This meeting will be all about the camera rig itself. We will be discussing and comparing various filming rigs, setups and accessories. We will also be discussing Magic Lantern firmware and various camera settings used for filming. This will be a workshop type format. Please bring your camera and filming rig. We'll be mostly focusing on the camera and not audio.
We will be doing some filming activities to practice and have hands on experience during the workshop.
If you're not going to make it, please update your RSVP to "Not Going".
Everyone, please bring your cameras, and any film making gear you have such as rigs, follow focuses, matte boxes, lenses, monitors, tripods, etc. And if you're bringing gear, please reply in a comment below with a list of the gear you will be bringing. Thanks!
I'll be bringing the following:
Canon 5D MkII
Macbook Pro + Final Cut Pro
shoulder mount rail system
follow focus
mattebox
potentially a DSLR cage (depends if it gets here in time)
potentially a new follow focus (also depends on shipping)
tripod
external monitor
some external styles
magic lantern
Ill bring my 5D, tripod and JuicedLink audio mixer and boom and mic.
That is great Chuck I would like to see the difference between the Zoom and Juiced Link
Everyone please try to have Magic Lantern, Marvel style and Technicolor Cinestyle installed on your camera prior to meetup.
Looks like I am the only one with a Nikon. As these styles are Canon only, will I be able to participate?
hey Rick, I've downloaded those free programs/updates to my computer , but i'm perplexed as to how to actually put them onto my camera. Do you have any tutorial link or site that would help me? What's more is that I don't think I ever installed the software that came w/ my camera, so I haven't been able to run the EOS update thing... since there's nothing to update.
Here is a good starting point ------> http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com/2011/01/19/finally-the-n...![]()
<----- it has links on how to install custom styles using the EOS software that came on a cd with your camera. Magic Lantern does not require that EOS software. It only requires a formatted CF/SD card. You can find documentation for Magic Lantern here ----> http://vimeo.com/30803116![]()
I never installed the software on the cd as well. And I had to hunt through my stuff to find it. You need that CD. You cannot download it from the Canon website.
Tom, you'll be able to participate and are encouraged to do so. We will only be spending some of the time discussing the firmware. We will be spending a lot of time discussing rigs and other accessories as well. In addition to that, we will also have some filming activities.

Please note that the meeting is on Saturday, February 11th at 4pm. Please try to be there on time. If you have a lot of equipment, it's probably a good idea to get there a little earlier as well.
It is not easy to obtain space and plan for events such as these on zero budget. Please help us to plan accurately by making sure your RSVP is accurate. It only takes a few minutes (if that) to update your status. And it will help those of us who are doing the planning and organization out a lot.
For the filming activity, we will be trying to replicate this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPHuE5pDlEs![]()

Uh, we are going to try to duplicate the dialogue in a wine bar? That might prove interesting. (c;
There's actually a cafe side which has similar furniture (sofa, seat, table). As for the wine bar side, I've been trying to come up with a good scene to reproduce, but can't think of one. If you have an idea or a favorite scene, please don't hesitate to let us know about it.
Rick, there's a book that you might find at Samuel French called "Telling Tales". It,s a series of one scene or one act plays by various authors, including a two person scene called "Sure Thing" by David Ives. It's about two characters who meet and must repeat their conversation over and over until they hit on the right combination of statements to make falling for each other a "sure thing". I've got a copy of the book. I'm not sure how I'd get it to you before the meetup, though.
I consider myself reasonably sharp. But I'm having no luck downloading the ML. Am I doing the ML Xmas edition?
Hi, Rick - I'm a writer / director, but I do not own my own camera. However, I love learning about them and using them. Would this workshop still be useful for me to attend? If not, no worries. Let me know when you have a moment.
Chuck: I just did the ML stuff on my camera; it took a little work but finally figured it out. Once I downloaded the files from the website, I used the walkthrough that Rick linked to. I put all the ML files on the SD card and booted it up that way; and it finally worked. You have a 5D, right? I have a T2i; perhaps they're different.
Hi Bill, I think information is always useful. Unless you are already familiar with all the DSLR cameras and how to use them specifically for filming, I think you will find this meeting informative.
Chuck, basically you want to format your CF card using the camera, put the magic lantern firmware in the root directory of the newly formatted CF card, install the CF card into the camera, go to the menu options where you can upgrade the firmware and select it. It will load the magic lantern firmware into memory. You should notice additional information on the view screen when you have successfully installed it.
I'm doing my best to make it but I was just in a major car accident Tues morning and still recovering a bit more. My car was totaled so I don't have a car yet. Seeing if I can get a friend to give me a ride now.
