Learn to Rappel! (Basic) 3/23/13

Interested in learning to Canyoneer?

Did the movie 127 Hours intrigue you?!

This workshop is a very basic introduction to rappelling, safety checks and fireman belaying (bottom belaying). This workshop is in no way a substitute for the Technical Canyoneering Course (http://www.meetup.com/canyoneering/events/104152542/). This course will, however, provide you with an introduction to rappelling, safety checks and bottom belays that can make taking the full course more beneficial.

We will spend the whole day rappelling at Stoney Point in Chatsworth.

  • Single strand on 8.3mm static canyoneering rope
  • Double strand on 8.3mm static canyoneering rope
  • Single strand on 9mm static canyoneering rope

I will also bring a variety of descenders for you to try: ATC, Pirana, Figure 8.

That's all we're going to do ... all day. So ...

If you don't know how to rappel .. come learn.

If you want to try out different descenders and ropes .. come experiment.

If you know how to rappel .. come practice.

This workshop will last all day .. 8am-4:30pm so bring water and a lunch. You will be required to sign a release of liability and assumption of risk. You may participate all day or for a few hours ... it's YOUR day.

Required gear for this workshop is a climbing harness (I will have a few to loan out on a first-come/first-served basis, check with me in advance), a helmet (climbing, bicycle, kayaking, snow boarding .. any helmet .. but you gotta have one!) and 1 locking carabiner.

Optional gear: Gloves, Descender of your choice (ATC, Figure 8, Pirana, ATS, etc). And feel free to bring any gear you have questions about ... I'm happy to answer any/all gear questions.

We will be scrambling around alot as we rappel, climb back up, rappel, climb back up, change stations, rappel, climb back up, etc. ....so wear some comfortable shoes with good 'grip' .. trail, running, approach shoes all work well. Bring sunscreen, maybe a hat, and clothes/layers appropriate for the forecast.

This workshop is open to everyone .. so invite your friends, your teenage kids, your spouse to join this meetup group and sign-up, or sign-up as +1 etc.

The cost for this workshop is $40 per person ... AND participants will be given a $40 discount on the tuition of a future Technical Canyoneering Course ... THAT MAKES IT FREE!! To reserve your spot, you must make payment within 2 days of your RSVP to Uber Adventures, 427 S Serrano Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90020 or paypal to [masked]

Your Instructor: Klaus Gerhart, American Canyon Guides Association certified Guide, Officer and Instructor, Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Technical Rope Rescue Technician, Basic Mountaineering Instructor for Sierra Club's Wilderness Travel Course, Whitewater Rafting Guide and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics Master Educator.

P.S.  If there's interest, afterward we can go to Shakey's for some Pizza, Salad and Camaraderie!

Klaus is awesome. He provided great instruction, equipment, and chose a great location for this class. He also made it a hell of a lot more fun, and I think most people would agree on this. Great meetup!

Klaus was very supportive and knowledgeable in rappelling. Its good to see someone with a passion for what there teaching. I would highly recommend his class to anyone looking to get into this sport. He showed a true emphasis on safety which everyone knows is important in rappelling. Can't wait for his next class. Good job Klaus.
