Scuba Diving in Southern Belize - 15 Dives, Ruins, Jungles

  • February 23, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Hi everyone!

I usually do a spring trip to Utah, but this year I'm mixing it up a bit with a diving trip to southern Belize. This one of the world's top diving destinations and easily the best in the Americas. The iconic Blue Hole itself is often ranked one of the top ten dives in the world, and the less famous Glover reef and the Elbow on Turneffe Atoll often have even better diving.

Diving will be a core of the trip, but we'll have time to check out Myan ruins, explore the rain forests, and chill on the beach too.

We'll be staying in southern Belize, away from the crowds in the north and closer to the best diving sites.

It should be a great trip!

How to get a spot:

Add yourself to the waiting list and contact Andre if you're interested and he'll have the dive shop contact you.

- You'll be paying the dive shop directly, with 50% due when you book
- If you're willing to share a room (2 beds) that can be arranged
- Price are 10% off the rates below since we have 10 people now

Trip highlights:

World Class Diving at the Blue Hole, Turneffe Atoll, Glover's Reef, and South Water Caye Marine Reserve. Dives have great visibility and most are suitable for all skill levels, although the Blue Hole itself is for advanced divers.

Turneffe Reef dives

"Considered by most to be the best diving that Belize has to offer, Turneffe is on all of the liveaboard itineraries."

It include The Elbow: "The 'must do' dive on Turneffe, stunning drop-offs and dramatic reef formations set a spectacular background to this dive site. Large schools of snappers and jacks feed in mid-water above the reefs, large jewfish and other groupers hide in the canyons. Groups of eagle rays are commonly seen as well as occasional sightings of sharks."

Light Reef and the Blue Hole:

Lighthouse Reef can boast an extraordinary diversity of reef topography including sandy reef-flat areas, walls, grooves and channels, caves and caverns.

The Blue Hole (seen above) is one of the most famous dives in the world. A collapsed cave roof makes a the hole shape which bottoms out at about 150m. You will go down to around 40m to see the now submerged remnants of stalactites.

Paradise Vacation Hotel, right on the beach!

Non-Diving Higlights:

7 mile cave-tubing: http://www.belizex.com/caves_branch.htm

Many Mayan Ruins: There are several famous ones, and the tallest building in Belize is actually a Mayan temple.

Also hiking, beaches, bird watching, waterfalls, caving, deep sea fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing.

Itinerary:

We'll have an inclusive package of dives and lodging for the group through Friday night. That's 7 nights with 5 days of diving, so we have some flexibility in case of bad conditions.

After that some of us will be staying another night to check out the ruins and see the sights. We'll discuss some rough plans, but what you do each day, where you eat, when you get up, that's all up to you.

Here's the Schedule:

Other Costs:

  • Airfare: $600- $800 to Belize City (Don't buy a plane ticket until you've checked with me regarding the details of the included air transfer.)
  • Insurance: Everyone should have travel insurance. Divers should have insurance that specifically covers diving (it is often excluded from medical coverage).
  • Food: Personal preference whether you want inexpensive street food or resort restaurants. Only two dinners included in the package, but there are several restaurants in the area.

Some of us are staying another night and day past the package. As a baseline, if we choose to stay at the Paradise another night, it would be $45/pp. Various full day guided trips to ruins, caves, hikes, etc, are $100 to $180. This part is only semi-organized, and we might just play it by ear once we are down there.

Weather:

This is the dry season (and unfortunately the high season for tourism).

Weather is tropical muggy, mid 70s to night to high 80s in the day.

The ocean is about 80f year around.

Q&A:

What diving experience is required? None, but not everyone enjoys diving, so if you haven't dived before you probably shouldn't commit to the dives in advance. You can get certified at the resort if you'd like.

- Open Water Course is US$250 each

- Open Water Referral is US$200 each

    HI Andre,

I just saw this..and I know you're full, but please contact if a spot opens up. I dove in Belize 2 years ago (long key) and while I'm not sure my schedule or wallet can swing..I'd love to try as this itinerary sounds awesome. Happy to share a room--so again, if a spot opens up, please let me know...

And for those you are confirmed, you're going to have the best time!

We are full and everyone made their final deposit, so I don't think we'll have any cancellations at this point.

I HIGHLY recommend getting certified with PCH Scuba. Great class, great instructors. Mention my name for a MASSIVE discount (think Groupon discount), or message me for details. Sounds fun, Andre! Wish I could go with!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
