Jazz Jam #25

*** ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be a limit set of performers of each Instrument (including Voice) per meetup. No more than 4 for each jam session. Instrument Categories are: Piano, Horns (all types), Guitar, Vocals.

So if the number is exceeded, performance will be on a first come, first served basis using the RSVP here as log. This will maximize enjoyment for all that participate.

Drums and Bass are handled by the house band, so in this case, only 1 additional player will be allowed per meetup.

So sign up early to guarantee your spot (and remove your name promptly if you're not coming).

Everyone else can come anyway to watch and support the others.

Show up and have some fun!

The routine: Sign up for Jams on the sheet and we'll call everyone by group. instruments will be limited per set so we don't have 10 horns or 10 guitars on a tune.

Each group gets to play 2 tunes in a Set. Please discuss intro/endings/tempo/style ahead of time to avoid restarts.

Vocalists get to sing one tune per set. Always bring music in your key. Although note that horns may need to transpose so complex arrangements may not work.

Other than that, the group decides what to play (well, hopefully it's Jazz). And if you call a tune, better know how to play the head :)

All levels welcome.

To improve your experience, if you're new, just watch first so you understand the interaction. Maybe you don't sit in till the next jam. There's a list of common tunes up top. A little preparation on some frequently called tunes will save the day.

I agree with Curtis' comment - that's a great idea! Can we request songs when we RSVP? It might also be good to list a key of preference as long as we're at it.

Gene, any communication is always good. And don't all be so quick to agree to play a tune if you think it is too difficult or obscure. This is not a "cut down" contest. :) Waltz for Debby was a little crazy if you've never played it before. LOL.

Had a great time as always! Just felt like tunes needed to be picked and started faster. Looking forward to the next one!

I feel that the entire Real book is too broad a selection of tunes for any one night. I feel that as a group we might get more out of the session if we identify a smaller set of tunes, well before the meet up date, so that the players that plan on attending could woodshed. Perhaps when a person RSVP's they could list two tunes they would like to do. If 15 people RSVP that would be 30 tunes that could serve as the core set of the night.

Lots of fun. A Great place to meet other musicians and play some music.

Lots of fun. Very friendly people and lots of different levels of skill, many of the experienced players were enthusiastic about helping us not-so-experienced people find the ONE and mind our 7s and 3s! I need to get a good version of waltz for Debbie and brush up on one note samba for the next session.

I'm sick about the foul-up with Waltz of Debby, a beautiful song with which I was unfamiliar. It wasn't anybody's 'fault', but Ross's older edition of the Real Book presented the score in a really confusing maze of repeats with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd endings, and we both got completely lost. It was the one song with my name on it (ballad with sweet melody), and I didn't get to play it.
